Chapter 5
Queen FifiThe picture of Adinah above but like I said in the previous chapter, you can imagine the characters in any way you want.
Minutes later, it's my turn to see the doctor and I sit on a chair across from her.
"Hi, I'm doctor Samuels." A woman with a beautiful glossy skin and sunrise-gold hair in a tight bun says. She doesn't extend her hand though. Why would she when she is talking to this insignificant pest. "What's your name?"
"Adinah."
"Okay Adinah, I'm gonna need you to take those shoes off and stand on the stadiometer over there." She points to the equipment near the window and I follow her instructions. She measures my height, scribbles something down and I move to stand on the scale for weight measurement.
"Please sit down and roll up your sleeve while I call the Phlebotomist." She's about to open the door when she suddenly halts and turns. "Oh, I mean literally." I look at her dumbfounded, does she think I'm that stupid? If someone will be drawing blood from my arm, I'll obviously have to roll up the damn sleeve! I shake my head in disbelief.
A chocolate skinned man with dimples and a clean shaven head enters, Doctor Samuels probably locked herself somewhere dark where the smell of blood won't reach her nose. It's a hospital for Pete's sake!
How does a creature with irresistible blood-sucking impulses work in a place meant to treat bloody people?"Hi, I'm Anil." Unlike the purely immaculate doctor, Anil holds out his hand for me to shake and I stretch mine out in return.
"Hi, Adinah."
Only a small number of humans are allowed to go to university for jobs like this one, the kind which vampires cannot at all do.He passes me the cotton wool to stop the bleeding when he's done and the perfect, porcelain doctor walks back in shortly after Anil and I exchange our goodbyes.
After sitting she questions, her dark brown eyes looking into mine. "How many times have you had periods in the last year?" Really? My index finger starts tapping on her desk in discomfort.
"Twelve?" The reply I'm giving comes out as a question but I can't help it, this conversation already feels too intrusive.
"What method of birth control have you used?"
"What? None!" My sitting position changes when I uncross my legs, adjusting my position and sighing.
"Is this necessary?""Yes, have you ever been in a sexual relationship?"
Yes, not just one relationship but many because I got so much time between school, working in the colony kitchens and fetching water from a three kilometer dam right? That's what I want to say to her but shake my head instead."Will me telling you that I never dated anyone or had any intimate relationship answer all your questions?" I desperately want the inquiry to end.
"Yes, thank you. You may tell the next person to enter." She says still writing something on the clipboard.
It's late in the evening and I'm in my room when a voice comes over the intercom. "Supper will be served in five minutes and failure to be in the dining hall in two minutes shall result in dire consequences."
Anger flares inside me, what are we? Wild animals that we'll be tossed a piece of meat and we'll all scramble towards it?
