Chapter 28
Changes
Nothing has changed, malnourished human beings, oblivious toddlers who won't giggle this much when they turn eight and finally realise how things work around here, everything is still the same as the last time I was here, it's just different faces this time.
"My lord," Jonathan greets with one hand behind his back and a bowed head.
He fakes it so well I almost believe everything he does is out of pure adoration for his King.
"Jonathan, anything I should know of?"
His attention is on Jonathan but I'm focusing on Lin whose eyes widen upon seing us but he recovers quickly then nods concisely in Aharon's direction with a small smile.
At least he only fakes a smile not respect.
I shake my head and walk towards the stairs but of course, he opens his mouth, pulling me to a halt.
"Where do you think you're going dressmaker?"
I roll my eyes then turn to face them. "I didn't realise I had to ask for permission before bathing. Now that you know where I'm going, can I please go, my lord?" I ask with a tilted head and tight smile.
"I'll walk her to her room," Lin offers and to prove my point further, Aharon is so neglectful that he hasn't even realised that Lin no longer addresses him with any title.
"Of course Lin, bring her out for lunch when she is done," he agrees but I wish he hadn't.
The last time I spoke to Lin was the day he'd 'helpfully' brought Matilda back and told me straight up that I owed him a favour, though I thought it would all be forgotten when I left but I guess it's not, now that I'm back.
I climb the stairs two at the time, eager to get to my old room but being as tall as he is, Lin doesn't stay behind.
"You are not supposed to be here," he whisper yells when we reach the top and I pause to look at him with a raised eyebrow then continue walking.
"Why does it matter so much to you that the spell will be broken?"
He tenses and blinks, probably not expecting me to know that much.
"It matters Adinah, you have no idea what you're getting yourself into.
Everyone wants Aharon to step down and you see these," he taps his fangs with his finger, "some of them will not even hesitate to use these on you."
"You too?" I pause again to examine his face only to see him smirking before he speaks.
"I'm a smart man Adinah, I don't kill people who owe me. I care deeply about my interests."
Of course he does, and the good news is that he doesn't even try to pretend with me.
We reach my room and the memories of the night I'd slammed the door in his face rush back, almost making me laugh.
"So whose side are you on?" I lean against the door and fold my arms over my chest.
He's obviously not on Aharon's nor Natan's because even through their differences, the two are on the same team.
Although they have their different reasons, they want the same thing;
They both want the spell to be broken but Lin on the other hand doesn't.
"I'm on my own side, loyal to myself," he confesses and shrugs but I don't shrug it off, rather I push it to the back of my mind, I'll have to deal with it later.
