Chapter 4
Trust in the lettersThat's how I imagine King Aharon in my head. 😂😂 The guy should forgive me for making him wear such clothes, but what to do? The king wants to dress in that manner.
You can still paint your own image of him though. With dread washing over me, I walk towards the sheet to pick it up, but not before looking around to see if anyone is watching me. When I see no one nearby, I quickly grab it as if the black tile will burn it into nothingness should it stay there another second. I then walk back to the hall, not wanting my absence to be noticed.
As good luck would have it, people are still dancing and I join them. I'm not really dancing though, I'm just standing amid them as to not draw attention to myself.
Minutes later, the vampires have feasted on humans and some of the bodies are motionlessly lying on their dear, lavish floors.Listening to Jonathan speak, it's evident that downing a few drinks also has an effect on the leeches. But then again, I can not know just how much he had to drink.
"Now, all of you osteal, abhorrent creatures inflicting pain on the the universe with your presence, come forward so the lord can select the first ten." Laughter explodes through out the room and we all walk forward while the mad King stands, dropping the body he was drinking from to the floor.Tonight he's still wearing the same pair of jeans he wore yesterday, the day before and the day before that one. A purple sleeveless vest and a cyan suit jacket for a change and his signature boots. He grins to show his crimson red teeth and my face involuntarily crinkles in disgust.
He starts picking and of course, luck can't stay longer on my side. I'm picked at number nine, Rosaline whom I never saw entering being chosen last. We are all told to wait on the side while the royal family and the council leave the room first.
They sluggishly walk out and with two letters in my hand now, I'm anxious to get back to my room. After closing my bedroom door hastily, I unfold the piece of paper and start reading.
Never lose hope for we shall come for you.
We care.Like the first letter, I reread this one and I still can't make out who would write me such a note.
After the breeders give birth to a child, they only breastfeed for the first six months and the child is passed over to the matron. Although the matron raised me, I sure as shooting know that she would do no such thing, not when her desire was for myself and Matilda to be chosen. She never harbored any bad intentions to be honest, she simply hoped and believed that one or the two of us would do the undoable, carry the King's seed to full term and be treated like royalty. The whole situation is buffling but I'm hopeful, maybe the person writing the letters will come through eventually.
After taking a shower, I place my only glimmer of hope, the letters under my pillow and welcome the darkness.I wake up drenched with sweat, my entire body shaking again from the same dream. After steadying my racing heart, I head to the bathroom and shower slowly. I reach for the letters and read them once again.
Who is 'we'?
I place the two pieces of paper in between the mattress and the base just before a voice breaks through the intercom which I hadn't even noticed was there."All the first ten carriers report to the hall now. I repeat, all the first ten carriers report to the hall now."
We all skitter to the hall where I straightaway spot Swardiantalina and decide to use her for my entertainment."The Castle dog is not watching the door this morning I see." I ridicule and she snorts but does not retort.
"Are you going to try your luck as an incubator too?" I mock again with a smirk when she does not respond but her face turning red makes me chuckle and I start walking in Rosaline's direction.
It's not my fault, she started this the moment she decided to hate her kind!"Hey, where did you go last night?" I whisper standing by her side.
"I'm sorry I disappeared like that. Did you meet them?" She asks in a whisper.
"Yes..., no.., maybe?" I sigh agitatedly because I'm not sure if that was meeting when I didn't even see their face. "Who are they?" My eyebrows are knitted at this stage.
"They are going to save us." I can't help but feel like she is being naive.
"Have you seen their faces?" I frain.
"No, but.... they are our allies." She sighs, I don't think she also believes that.
"How do you even know them Rosaline?" I whisper shout.
For all we know, this could be sick test by the mad King to see if we'd dare try to escape.Just as she's about to open her mouth to answer, Jonathan tells us to go outside where we're all loaded into the pick-up truck leading to the hospital.
Today we are all going for tests so the mad king can know if we're prolific or worthy of being blood bags. The truck pulls up in the parking lot and we all walk inside, the strong smell of iodoform quickly cutting through my nose. Jonathan leads us to the elevator and that figure at the bottom of the stairs, I'd recognize it anywhere. She's holding the bucket in her left hand and a black mop which was originally white in her right hand.
She quickly turns her head and there is no more life in those amber eyes which were filled with mischief throughout our childhood, making me wonder what has changed in my absence. I stop in my treks, a lump forming in my throat seing Matilda like this and I feel the need to let my tears fall freely and run to her but she looks at Jonathan and shakes her head. Matilda and I were never apart, we never could go a day still mad at each other. Although every matron is given ten children to raise after every two years, no one has ever been able to get between us, we will forever be sisters and I know her heart breaks like mine when she looks away. I know for a fact that she doesn't want me to see her tears and I also wipe mine.
I quickly glance at Rosaline and she gives me a sad smile, waving me over but I take one more glimpse at Matilda's fragile figure and I know for her sake, I'll have to put my trust in the letters.Hey guys.
Anyone with an idea of who the letters may be coming from??? Be free to take a guess. Please vote and comment.
