*Sawyer's POV*
We had been on the road nearing the thirteen hour mark, but we were almost home. While it was a long drive, Kane had made the best of it, singing to the radio non-stop. I thought for sure he'd grown tired or he'd have lost his voice, but he was going on strong, belting out the second verse of Johnny Cash by Jason Aldean with all the windows down.
Kane had surprised me, before we left, by telling me that he had left some clothes in the bathroom for me to change into. I walked in to find a pair of jeans, a plane grey tanktop, and one of his plaid shirts. To top it all off, he had dug out my old pair of cowboy boots that I had worn all over Georgia when I lived there and when we had met. He knew me too well.
Sliding on the boots had been a bit of a struggle with my ankle, but I managed. With my crutches under my arms, I had inspected myself in the mirror as Kane had come in to check on me. He let out a whistle and my cheeks burst out in a blush as he said I was still as beautiful as the day he met me on the side of the road. Climbing into Rex, his 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 on a lift kit, had been the next challenge that we faced, but with Kane's help I managed and had pulled my crutches in and put them on the back seat.
As we pulled into the familiar little farming town, my smile grew. I closed my eyes and breathed in. Kane laughed and reached over, taking my hand in his.
"If you lean any further you're gonna fall out." Kane said
"It smells just like I remember it." I smiled with my eyes closed.
We drove through downtown and passed people with their fruit and vegetable stands. We passed a tractor, and I couldn't help but lean out and look back at it. Now this is more like it. We passed Howard's vegetable stand as he was selling some leaks and carrots to a woman. We passed the Alter's little grocery and convenience store. Mrs. Alter's was outside grabbing the mail and waved to us.
We drove on and pulled onto a gravel road. Kane gunned it and we kicked up the gravel and dust, probably leaving quiet the rut in the road. I squeezed his hand as he did so and let out a little scream, causing him to laugh.
"Show off!" I laughed
"Maybe." Kane smiled
We pulled into the old dirt driveway and saw the old farm house. My father had made some fixes to it, mostly the old stairs and railings and a fresh coat of paint. And he was standing on the porch waiting for us. It was still home.
*Kane's POV*
I swung down out of my truck and ran over to Sawyer's side. I opened the door and held my arms out to her to help her down. Her father had come down from the porch and was there to help support her until I got her crutches down. I turned around and Sawyer was hugging him tightly. He pulled back and looked at us.
"Look at you! What happened to your hair? Did the leeches get to it or somethin'" He laughed
"My manager thought blonde looked better for my career." Sawyer said
"Pshhh. I tell you that lady doesn't know a good thing when she sees it. All them people always changing things about others. I think your red was just fine. Bet Brownie agrees with me too." He said and looked at me.
Her father had given me the nickname "Brownie" after he continuously mispronounced my last name from when Sawyer and I had started dating. He knew how to properly say it now, but the name had stuck. Sawyer found it cute and said that it fit since she found me sweet and I was a gooey mess when it came to her because there's nothing I wouldn't do for her.
"I like it either way." I shrugged and got down our bags.
"Let me help you with those an' we'll go inside and get some supper." he said.
He grabbed the bag I handed him and I grabbed Sawyer's bag. We headed inside and up to Sawyer's old room. I put her bag down on her old bed and looked around for her dad and where he had taken my bag. I heard him call to me from down the hall and went to find him in the guest room. My bag was placed on the bed. He put a hand on the foot-board and tipped his hat back, looking me in the eyes.
"Now I dunno how they do it out there, but under my roof you gotta follow my rules. An' you'll be sleeping in here tonight." He said
"Yes, sir." I didn't want to argue.
"Dad!" Sawyer yelled from the doorframe
"What? Just lookin' to see how well he follows the rules." her father smiled and winked at me, "Let's head downstairs for supper. You can help set the table, Kane."
He walked out of the room and Sawyer whispered her apology to me as I helped her descend the stairs. It was alright by me considering her father and I both knew what was to come. I helped set the table and her father dished out the food. He had made fried potatoes and onions with cornbread and fried okra. Sawyer's eyes lit up when she saw freshly made peach cobbler was up for dessert.
"Alright. Well I'm stuffed for the night. I think I'm gonna go take a shower and head to bed." Sawyer said and looked at me.
"I might have another piece of cobbler and then take a shower. You get some sleep." I said
She leaned over and pecked me on the lips before slipping her crutches under her arms and heading towards the stairs. Her dad was working on the dishes and I cleared the table, helping him. The water for the shower started running as I wiped down the table. He turned around and leaned against the sink.
"You said you wanted to talk when you phoned the other day." Her father said.
