*Sawyer's POV*
"Are you sure you're feelin' up for this?" Kane asked for the fifth time.
"Yes! Just like every other time you've asked me." I said.
"Ok. We can always come right back here if you're in any pain." Kane said
"Kane, babe, It'll be fine." I laughed
I had wanted to go into town and look around the stores since it'd been almost a year since I had left. Kane had been worried about how much walking we'd be doing. We had been going back and forth all morning. We were just about to load up into Kane's truck when dad handed us a list of things he needed picked up.
Kane helped boost me up into the cab of his truck, and I tucked my crutches in the back. He climbed in and we pulled out of the driveway, headed to town. I rolled down the window and felt the breeze rushing past us. One of Kane's songs popped on the radio, 'Weekend'. I smiled at how fitting it was and sang along. Kane was quiet. Too quiet. I looked over but couldn't see past his glasses. His cheeks were flushed pink with a blush and I smiled.
Kane pulled into a parking spot. The weather was bright and warm, attracting people to town and shopping at the small family owned stores. Kane adjusted his glasses and hat before helping me out and grabbing my crutches. He didn't want to attract attention to him or cause a scene in such a large crowd.
We walked and hobbled around for a while, not looking at anything in particular, until I spotted a navy blue dress in the window of one of the little stores. It wasn't very fitted but it looked beautiful to me. Kane noticed that it had caught my eye and he walked into the shop, holding the door open for me. After finding my size and the dressing room, I stared at myself in the mirror.
The color was perfect. It had the perfect sleeve length, perfect trimming, and fit me perfectly. I pulled back the curtain to show Kane. We had been the only customers into the woman's shop and she had been eager to see the dress as well.
"Oh!" She cried, "What a perfect fit! Almost like it was made for you." She smiled
"You think?" I asked, glancing at the mirror. "What do you think?" I looked at Kane.
"It looks good on you. Do you like it?" He smiled
I put my hand on my hip and looked again. The older woman had been right. It was like it was made just for me. But I couldn't get it. It was nothing like my stylist team would choose for me. It was too 'Georgia', and they would say that it was tacky. They'd never let me go out in anything like this.
My smile fell and I sighed, "It's a nice dress, but I dunno if it's my style." Lies.
"Are you sure?" Kane sat forward, taking off his glasses to look at me.
"If it's the price then I'd be more than happy to drop it down a bit." The woman said.
"No thank you, ma'am. But thank you for the offer." I said feeling horrible.
I closed the curtain and took one last look at myself in the dress. I pulled my phone out and snapped a quick photo of it. I got changed back into my clothes and put my crutches under my arms before opening the curtain and putting the dress back onto the rack. I couldn't look the woman in the eye, she seemed so disappointed. To humor her, I bought a simple necklace from her.
Kane put his glasses back on as we left the boutique. I began hobbling off as fast as I could. I was lost in my thoughts about going back to modeling and dreading it when one of my crutches caught in a crack. Kane reached out and caught me as I stumbled.
"Slow down there. What's the rush?" Kane said.
"Just wanna get dad's groceries." I said.
"We can do that before we leave. Why don't we go back to the truck and grab your camera? Then you could take some photos." Kane suggested
I shook my head, "I'm feeling kind of tired."
He nodded and we crossed the street and ducked into the Alter's store. There were several other customers getting little grocery items and checking out. Kane grabbed a basket and we went up and down the aisles, collecting what was on the list. Mrs. Alter's was ecstatic to see us again. She began ringing up and bagging our items.
"So how's life in New York and California been?" Mrs. Alter's asked.
"They sure know how to keep me busy." I said, forcing a smile onto my face.
"We saw your photo on the cover of one of our magazines. They flew off the shelves. Everyone just had to hear what you were up to." Mrs. Alter laughed, "And of course we heard about your little accident." she whispered
"Yeah. Took quiet the fall. Sprained ankle and I'm on crutches for another day or two." I forced a laugh.
"But you've got him taking good care of you, Hun." She smiled at Kane, "Oh look at me holding up the line. You two have a good day."
We said our goodbyes and Kane carried the paper sack out to the truck and helped me in. I let out a big breath before Kane got into the truck. We were driving back and I took the chance to peek at the picture of me in the dress again.
"It looked good on you. We can still go back and get it." Kane said, jolting me awake.
I locked my phone, "No. I don't even know why I took a picture of it."
"Sawyer..." Kane said, "What's wrong?"
