-a year later-

I had to stop Sokka from going into war with his father. It was a very sad day for all of us. Unfortunately, the war escalated quickly.

My arm healed enough for me to hold my other sword, so I've been dual sword training since Hakoda left. It hurts, and Sokka (now the kind of Cheif of the village) doesn't approve, but I do it anyway.

Kai has been helping in the art of dual sword fighting. It's actually a lot more difficult then I expected, and I'm still injured, and that doesn't help at all. I'm used to pushing myself past my limits, but this is ridiculous.

"May..."

I tilt my head back and see Katara, nervously playing with her necklace. I know she's upset and worried, so I try to out on a reassuring smile. "What is it Katara?"

"Do you think... the Avatar will return?"

I nod, "Of course he or she will. The world can't survive without them." I put my swords away and move to stand by her side.

She looks down at her feet, which is strange even for her. She's usually more up beat, and head strong, now she's timid and sad... I don't like this.

She speaks in a whisper. "Honestly, I'm scared... And... Sokka is too..."

I hug her shoulders to try and comfort her. "It's okay to be afraid, Katara. I'm scared too."

"You are? You never seem like it."

I roll my eyes. "Of course I don't, someone has to be the adult around here- even though I'm only 14... But I'm turning 15 soon so... Meh." I laugh a little to lighten the mood.

She smiles, just a little. "Yeah.. Sokka definitely isn't cut out for it."

I hum, and continue what I was gonna say, "Everyone gets scared and nervous at times like this, it's natural. All we can do is think positive, and hope for the best."

Katara nods and hugs me, even though she's two years younger than I am, she's about the same height as me. This girl has always been sweet, treating me like an older sister, it's really nice.

"Oh right, I have to do the laundry!" She runs off, waving and yelling, "Sokka will come get you for dinner! See ya later May!"

I wave back. "Don't hurt yourself, or smell Sokka's socks! They're deadly!"

I went straight back to training with Kai. I did stop every now and then to dote on him, but otherwise I was working with my arm and swords. No matter what kind of medicine I use, I know I'm gonna have a nasty scar. At least my hand doesn't look too bad, my fingers just look like I got scratched a few times by a cat or something.

The moon is out now, Sokka came to get me hours ago and I told him I would be right there buuuut...... Eh. Stuff happens.

"Let's go again, Kai."

Kai stretches his wings in response and gets himself ready. Yeah, I might not make it to dinner.

-months later-

"May, you've been here for almost two years now, aren't you gonna get tired?"

I shake my head at Katara's question. "How could I be tired when I have such an adorable little sister that constantly worries for me?" I smile at her.

Right now, she's applying the last of the medicine I have to my arm. The damage has been done, it's starting to become a scar. I can move it freely now with only slight discomfort, but for the sake of me just not liking it, I'll probably keep it bandaged for the rest of my life.

She puffs her cheeks and starts wrapping up my arm. "Hey, I'm serious! You came here to get away from the Fire Nation right? What happens if they attack you here!"

"Katara, if I was bored I would've left already and if they find me here, well I can protect myself now." I wait until she's done to open and close my hand. "Anyway, ya don't have to worry so much sweetie. Now, I gotta take Kai for a fly, be back soon!" I wink before walking out the door.

Really I just want to relax with Kai, because he's cute, just so damn cute. And I don't want to deal with Sokka's mouth when he finds out Kai ate all his seal jerky...
