The city street was hot as the sun beat down on the sidewalk. The record high temperatures that normally would keep the pair in managed to force the unhappy pair out. The store they order groceries from time to time had closed temporarily after a burglary a few days prior and the next closest store didn't deliver.
Jisoo and Lisa trudged back to their apartment, hands weighed down with bags of food. While Jisoo held the lobby door open for Lisa, the taller woman stared off at something in the street. Making an impatient noise, the older woman brought Lisa back to the present. "Come on, we have cold stuff!" The pair walked up to their flat and put their food away.
"What are you doing," Jisoo asked. Lisa had gone into their room and changed in a tank top and shorts, tying her long hair into a high ponytail.
"Getting ready. Go ahead and get changed. I'll be waiting."
"Get changed for what?"
"It's a surprise!" Rolling her eyes, Jisoo went into the bedroom and changed into high waisted jean shorts, a purple t-shirt, and sneakers.
"Is this good," she asked as she left the room. Lisa nodded happily before taking her hand.
"Come on, let's go!" Leading Jisoo out of the front door, Lisa ran downstairs, completely avoiding the elevator.
"What is so important," Jisoo panted, "That we couldn't wait for the elevator?"
"We need the exercise," the tall girl replied. "Trust me, we'll have fun!" Once the girls got down to the lobby door, Lisa held it open as the bright sunlight scorched the concrete.
"Lisa, please tell me whatever we're doing is inside," Jisoo whined.
"Nope!" Pulling her gently, Lisa slowly approached a group of children on the sidewalk. Tapping a girl with big black pigtails and a pink skirt on the shoulder, Lisa leaned down to talk to her.
"Hello," the little girl greeted.
"Hi sweetie! Do you think me and my friend could use some of your chalk?" After a moment of deliberation and discussion with her friends, the little girl nodded and handed them a dusty box of chalk.
Picking out a blue, Lisa thanked the girl and found a clean stretch of sidewalk, Jisoo following her with red. "What do we do now," Jisoo asked, eyeing the chalk.
"Draw!" Grinning like a bunny, Lisa started sketched a blue flower. Making the tips of the petals blue, she exchanged the chalk for a pink from another little girl next to her with a green shirt.
Going down the drawing, Lisa made the petals blue, pink, purple, and white. Finally, she filled in the leaves and stalk in with green. After watching her friend, Jisoo started doodling a lopsided red shape.
After observing her for a moment, Lisa asked, "Is it a lima bean?" Jisoo froze, eyes trained on the bean-like shape.
"...yes. I am." She had no clue what she was making, she was just putting the chalk to the concrete.
"That's the spirit! Draw the first thing that comes to mind and the ideas start flowing!" Going back to her purple grass, Lisa hummed happily to herself. After a while of tentative drawing, they were both laughing as they drew anything that came to mind.
"Ma'am," an adorable little boy with a faux hawk said. He stood wringing his hands and looking at the ground as he talked to Lisa. "Can you and your friend help us draw a big butterfly?" Beaming, both girls stood up and followed the bashful boy to the rest of the group.
"What should we do first," Jisoo asked. After getting their roles assigned, the group started their butterfly. Lisa watched the outline to make sure it was even while Jisoo directed the shapes.
When it was completly outlined, they all got to work of coloring. Jisoo and Lisa were in charge of coloring details since they were tall enough to see the full picture.
Laughter rang through the street as amused parents watched their children play with the sweet young women. Picking up the children, Lisa and Jisoo let them see how their masterpiece came out.
"Does it look good," Jisoo asked the bashful boy. He smiled shyly and nodded.
The girls climbing around Lisa's shoulders agreed with squeals of happiness. "Why don't you like talking to us," Jisoo asked the little boy gently.
"You're really pretty," he mumbled. Laughing, both Lisa and Jisoo hugged the children as their parents called them to go in.
"Can we do this tomorrow," the little girl in pigtails asked.
"Of course," Jisoo told them. Standing with Lisa, the pair waved as the children were ushered inside, smiling at their goodbyes.
"That was a lot of fun," Jisoo said as the two packed up the chalk. They were assigned to keep the box for the night so they would have to come back and play with the kids again.
"I knew you would like it," Lisa told her. The pair walked hand in hand to the stairs, meandering up as they talked.
"Can we really do it again tomorrow," Jisoo asked.
"Of course! We can't let those kids down can we?" Opening the door to their apartment, the two strolled inside.
"Well, I guess we should get to bed," Jisoo suggested. "We can't be late."
Smiling, Lisa nodded and gathered her things for a shower. "You order the pizza while I'm showering. We can eat after you take yours and then we can go to bed." Nodding, Jisoo called their favorite pizza place and put in their orders.
Later that night, the two girls snuggled together in bed, slightly sunburnt from their day outside and excited to spend more time with the kids. Jisoo tucked hair behind Lisa's hair, wondering when they would have their own.
