It's times like this where I believe I must have done something completely wrong. I must have done something to deserve this. Of course, I'm talking about my wonderful report card. Note the heavy (and I mean heavy) sarcasm in the word wonderful. "Oh, I'm so dead," I whisper to myself as I hold the damn paper. I promised my mom straight A's last semester so that she'd spare my life. All the C's that are staring back at me just mock me.
"Serena? Why are you just standing in front of your mailbox?" I hear Hector's voice ask me.
I turn around to see my best friend. He wears a nice blue sweater that complements his tan skin. "Nice sweater," I say to him.
"Thanks, but you didn't answer me." He says as he crosses his arms. Dang, I could never let anything slip without him noticing. "Oh, is that your report card?" He asks noticing the white paper in my hand.
I sigh, "unfortunately it is,"
He smiles and takes the paper out of my grasp. "You couldn't have done that bad." He jokes not knowing what I got. His brown eyes scan the stupid paper and he starts cracking up. "Oh my god, Serena!"
"Stop laughing!" I shout as I try to snatch the paper back. "Hector I mean it!"
He wipes away a stray tear and hands me the paper. "Jesus Serena what did you do?"
"Oh, forgive me mister 'I always get straight A's' that I actually struggle in school." I mock him.
"By struggle, you mean not doing any homework." He points out. I glare at him and make my way to my driveway. "Oh come on, Serena! It was a joke!"
I stop at my front door and turn to look at him, "Hector I'm a dead woman when my mom sees this."
"I know." He replies.
I roll my eyes, "I can't do this anymore."
He laughs and jogs toward me. "If it helps I can be there for you when she comes back."
Pouting I walk over to him and wrap my arms around his torso. "What would I do without you?"
"Absolutely nothing cause you depend on me too much." He says as he hugs me back. I pinch his side making him laugh, "that hurt."
"Good."
He gently nudged me off of him and he tucks in my hair behind my ear. "I won't let any harm come to you."
I look him in his eyes, "promise?"
He smirks as he offers me his pinky. I internally squeal as I wrap my pinky around his. "Pinky promise." He swears.
"You really do know how to get on my good side," I say as I playfully tug on his pinky.
He opens his mouth to say something but my mom's car interrupts him. She hops out of the car and stares at our interlocked pinkies. "Oh, am I interrupting something?"
Hector immediately takes his pinky back and looks away from embarrassment.
"Yeah, we were in the middle of joining an occult." I joke making my mom glare at me.
"Very funny Serena. For that little joke, I'm not gonna make you any dinner. You can starve for all I care." She threatens.
I gasp audibly, "you wouldn't!"
She unbuckles Melody out of her silver car and places her on her hips. "I didn't hesitate Serena!" She scolds. "Here hold Melody." She hands my baby sister to Hector, who quickly grabs the baby.
"Why didn't you hand Melody to me?" I ask her.
She huffs and opens her trunk, "cause you're gonna help me take in the groceries."
