The Talon shuttle rushed through the air silently, its stealth drive engaged to avoid detection. In the passenger area, you sat alone, with Sombra currently preoccupied in the pilot's seat. The two of you were alone on this mission, no superiors breathing down your necks and no backup team in case it all went wrong. It showed a level of trust from Talon that you had not yet experienced, but to keep that trust you had to do this properly.
With a sigh, you lifted your pulse rifle onto your lap and wiped it down with a cloth. Your old mentor, Thompson, had always maintained that entering any conflict without preparing was a sure-fire defeat. You had lost count of how many times he had chastised you for a dirty weapon, no doubt he was choking on his words as he looked down on you now.
In a slow movement, you reached to your side and screwed a suppressed extended barrel onto your rifle, almost doubling its length. You then proceeded to replace its standard holographic sight with a variable zoom, effectively turning it into a marksman rifle. Aiming it forwards at the wall, you stared down the scope, and mimicked pulling the trigger.
"Hm...nice weapon. That's definitely the sort of thing I'd steal" Sombra commented, leaning on the doorway to the cockpit.
You could vaguely see the auto-pilot button lit up on the dashboard behind her and nodded your head in response to her words.
"This is a semi-automatic now...if I've got to kill this guy...this is my best chance at making it quick" you replied, holding your rifle up once more before placing it down on the seat beside you.
"Hey, héroe...how are you holding up?" Sombra questioned with sincerity, immediately noticing the uncertainty in your voice.
You gave a grim smile, shaking your head.
"I'll be fine when this is done, until then...just don't ask, please" you answered quietly, causing the hacker to nod her head in understanding.
She took a seat beside you, silently retrieving the machine pistol from her belt and checking its components. For a moment, it looked as if she was actually checking her weapon, but in reality she was only fiddling to pass the time. There was an awkward tension in the air, and no matter how many times you had told her not to, you could tell that Sombra still felt guilty for putting you in this position.
"Attention: SATCOM guidelines advise against all air travel in the region, a tropical cyclone has been reported over the Indian mega-city of Utopaea. This craft's electrics will not withstand the storm for a prolonged period" the shuttle's artificial intelligence suddenly reported.
You glanced towards Sombra, who gave a worried look. The plan you had previously agreed on was a complex one, involving a great deal of infiltration as well as measured patience. But according to local weather reports, Utopaea was about to get engulfed in its largest cyclone in nearly a decade, which was just typical.
"Shit...looks like our mission window has just about disappeared. We've got thirty minutes, tops, then we need to get the hell away from here" you commented, cocking your rifle back and standing up with a deep breath.
While Sombra remained seated, you slowly walked towards the back of the ship and opened the rear doors. The wind instantly howled in with such a ferocity that you barely managed to keep your feet. You tentatively glanced downwards, seeing a bolt of lightning arc through the clouds below in a spectacular lightshow.
With a wince, you shook your head and clenched your fists. There was no other option. Ignoring Sombra, you swiftly retrieved a stealth chute and clipped it around your back. You slung your rifle over your shoulder, attaching it to your armour magnetically, before placing a breathing mask over your head.
