White noise. In the far distance, the gentle beeping of a cardiogram accompanied the constant ticking of a wall clock. From these sounds alone, you could recognise where you were. You had been here before. The medical bay in Watchpoint Gibraltar. It seemed the aftermath of every great battle led you here.
You opened your eyes, slowly, and found yourself greeted by a harsh white light right above your head. You squinted in pain, and someone noticed, moving the lamp away. With a laboured breath, you turned to your side, and a familiar face smiled back at you. Olivia. There was so much you wanted to say, but right now you didn't have the strength to utter a word. Fortunately, she spoke for you.
"You did it, soldado. You ended it...and you didn't die trying" she said, placing a gentle hand on your cheek.
You coughed, and she quickly passed you a glass of water which you proceeded to gulp.
"Ugh...thanks. Thought I would for a moment...I was ready...to die trying. But you were there...like I always knew you would be. You were there...and you saved me again" you responded in a weak voice.
Olivia smiled, avoiding your gaze.
"Gracias for the compliments...but I don't deserve them. I left you in a hospital bed because I was afraid to lose you...the moment I walked away I knew I'd made a mistake. Sorry it took me so long to do something about it" she said in a sincere tone.
It was something she had wanted to say for a while, but the last thing you needed from her was an apology. You had always understood her decision and didn't blame her a bit.
"You came back...that's what matters, you came back. I passed out, right? What happened?" you questioned.
Your memory of the events following the battle was foggy at best. The moment Maximilien had died you'd felt Angela's pain suppressant begin to wear off, and without it you lacked the strength you needed. Once again, you were very lucky to be alive.
"After the battle? Hm...do you want the good news or the bad?" Olivia asked in return, a question you hadn't really wanted to hear.
"Ah...what the hell? Give me the good news for once...what went right?" you responded.
Olivia gave a smile.
"You made the right choice sparing the omnics. Just like the monk said, as soon as they woke up again, they were innocent. Most of them are helping the Manhattan relief effort now. It'll be a long time until people trust omnics again...but thanks to you they can prove themselves personally" she explained.
You breathed a sigh of relief, that had been one of the hardest decisions of your life. It was nice to know that everything had worked out, but that did beg the question, what was the bad news?
"We did something good after all...what's the bad news?" you questioned, noticing a guilty look appear on Olivia's face.
"Jack...he's gone. He sacrificed himself to kill Gabriel...and covered me so that I could get to you. I'm sorry...he was a good man. They're holding a funeral for him in a few days..." she stated, and instantly you felt as if you'd been punched in the gut.
Jack was...dead? He had undoubtedly been the toughest one here, you guessed that was why he'd made the sacrifice over anyone else. But the fact that he died so that Olivia could save you...that hurt. The battle was over, but not without its costs. Fareeha, Mei, Jack...not to mention the countless others whose names you could never know. All dead for something greater than themselves. They would be remembered...
