"THEY'RE ALL RUINED!" Gran Torino shouted.
"D-Don't worry! I'll go buy some more!" Izuku replied.
Without any time spared, he was already out the door. Izuku had just figured out a way to get a better handle on One For All by allowing the power generate through his body instead of using it in short burst. He decided to dubbed the technique 'One For All: Full Cowling". Rai was amazed at the new development as well as proud of Izuku. He was finally starting to make the power his own, and with quick progress.
"That boy, messing up good food." Gran Torino said.
Rai chuckled. "Well then, what should I do?" he asked.
"Well first show me what you can do. Your quirk is somewhat similar to your father's from what I heard." Gran Torino replied.
"Yes, like my dad I can generate lightning and shoot it out in any direction I choose, but I can also use my lightning to enhance my physical capabilities. If I generate energy in my upper body, I gain a slight strength advantage and if the energy is generated in my lower body, I gain a speed advantage." Rai explained.
"Well, lets see what the speed advantage will give you." Gran Torino said.
Without a second thought, he started dashing from one place to the other. Rai didn't react fast enough and got hit in the back, which caused him to stumble. Rai then shifted his power to his legs and tried to match the speed of the old hero. For about 20 minutes straight, Rai had tried his best to match Gran Torino, but to no avail. While his foot work was good due to the shift in power to his legs, when trying to hit back or grab Gran Torino it was a no go.
"Your upper movements are too slow boy." Gran Torino informed.
With a swift kick to the stomach, Rai was put down. That one seemed to hurt more the that other hits he received. Now positioning himself so he could sit up right, he tried to figure out how he could improve. But before he could think, Izuku came back with the replacement pastries.
"Well now that he's back with the food, we should call it a day and rest for now." Grand Torino added.

Taking a page from Izuku, Rai decided to go out late in the night to see if he could find a way to upgrade his abilities. He went two blocks down, stopping at a work site that was empty for the night that he and Izuku passed on their way to their internship. Once he selected an area to practice, he started to reflect on the words grandpa Torino said during their training session.
"My movements are slow, no he said my upper movements are slow."
For a long time, he never gave the thought of his movements being slow in the upper area when he shifted his power to his legs. He never had a problem with situations before when he need to react fast with his arms.
"But that was before today. Man, if I'm gonna get a solid hit on grandpa then I'll need to figure out how to overcome my weakness...but how?"
Thinking back on everything that happened today, he started playing out the early match up between Izuku and Gran Torino. Izuku had found out that by allowing the power in his body to flow through everywhere, he could effectively use One For All now and increase his speed and reaction time.
"Hmmmm. What if....I do the same?"Rai then focused. He started channeling his energy through his body.

It was a bit of a challenge. He struggled with keeping the power flowing inside and whenever he stopped there would be short but strong out burst of electricity crackle out of him. The burst would cause some of the lights around the area to flicker. For an hour and forty minutes straight, he tried and tried again. Thankfully for him, it wasn't that late at night. Gran Torino and Izuku went to sleep as soon as the sun went down. Rai saw that as an opportunity to head out.
After what seemed like the fiftieth time of trying to get his body use to the stress, this time it wasn't as difficult. While there was the occasional soreness that came from using this process, the pain was bearable. Relief washed over him, he finally succeeded with having the power flow through him. But this wasn't the last step. He need to do more with this new technique he developed. He started moving, trying to see if there would be a struggle with it. No such thing, no trouble, no hardships, he was simply moving as he usually would. There was no change in his movements. He couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
Then all of a sudden his head started to feel that same feeling being stabbed with knives. The pain caused him to fall to his knees. This pain wasn't easy to deal with this time either. He knew what this meant, but the pain still hurt like hell. Suddenly a new flood of memories poured back into him.
His first meeting Izuku and Bakugou, the rivalry between him and Bakugou, his training with Izuku and All Might, and one that really stumped him, the day he saw Mina with another guy at the mall and how he felt when he saw it. The memories of him and Bakugou and the memory Mina with that other guy were the ones to leave him in a bitter mood as he got back to his feet. Just great, more reasons to feel down tonight. While those thoughts made him feel a little upset, he was more upset at how the ability he just created didn't feel or look all that special.
"I should be grateful. I'm able to move freely without hard effort. But still, I thought there would be more than just this slight glow on me." he said as he looked down to see his body give off a small glow.
He decided to give it a rest for the night. He felt a little discouraged as he was about to leave the area. Then out of no where, he felt a surge of power emanate from his body. He felt like he was a little lighter in his weight. What happened next was his body started glowing a little more brightly. There were also electricity surrounding him. And the kicker, his dreads started to move, as if a slight breeze was going through them.
"Wow, this feeling....just...wow."
He was amazed at this new sensation. He basked in this feeling for a good few minutes. The feelings he had when getting the sour parts of his memory disappeared within seconds. Then he got an idea.
"Lets see how far I can go with this new surge of power."
*********************************
It was around eleven at night when he arrived back at Gran Torino's place. He was tired from his private work out with his new ability. He dubbed the power boost 'Surge Mode'. It seemed appropriate since he would described the feeling when activating it as a surge of electrical power coursing inside him. While in that mode he realized that he had the bonus of having both the strength and speed boost no longer needing to shift the power in his upper or lower body. He also learned that the world around him slowed down a bit. He noticed a bird flying around the area and while looking at it, he saw that it was moving slow. What made it all the more clear that it wasn't the birds idea to move slow when he powered down. The bird moved normally. After a while he soon realized that slow down in perception had a time limit. It would only stay active for up to twenty seconds, and he couldn't simply turn it back on by going in and out of Surge Mode. So that was some he needed to practice on if he wanted to be more efficient in his future as a hero. He went to bed ecstatic about the possible outcome tomorrow had.
The next day, he woke up feeling energized. He was ready to put his new technique to the real test. After Izuku was done with his session with the retired hero, with a little more success than last time. He was able to leave a mark on the old man, although he nor Rai noticed as they were still focusing on Izuku's progress. This time it was Rai's turn to try, and he couldn't hold back his excitement.
"Are you ready boy?" Gran Torino asked.
Without saying a word, Rai activated his new move. His body started glowing, lightning engulfing his body and his dreadlocks levitating. His weight lighter than original. A slight whoosh could be heard as he stood firm and ready for his test. Both Gran Torino and Izuku were shocked at this sudden boost in power.
"I'm ready Grandpa Torino, time to show you my new technique, Surge Mode!"
