I looked down at the empty seat beside me and felt my heart drop into my stomach. Had she only agreed to making our marriage work so she could get me on this plane and on the other side of the world before she moved away and left forever? Had I hurt her one too many times? I looked around incase maybe she'd been sat elsewhere.
The cabin crew were running through the emergency procedures and I could see the ground crew readying the plane to leave the gate. I tightened my belt and leant back in my seat with a heavy sigh.
'Passengers are reminded at this time that this is a no smoking flight.' Came an announcement over the tannoy.
'Fuck, I need a cigarette so bad. I hate flying. You'd think they'd allow you to smoke if you didn't like flying.'
She slumped down in the seat beside me, her hair a mess around her red face, out of breath as though she'd been running. I couldn't stop smiling. She'd made it. She was here.
'I thought you'd changed your mind.' I told her. But now she was here I couldn't believe I'd doubted her.
'My alarm didn't go off. I thought I was going to miss the flight. I'm really sorry.'
'Lillian?' Woody, sat on the row in front of us, turned around. 'What...?'
'Oh, hey bro. Thought I'd come along for the ride, you know how much I love flying.' She laughed. And then she turned to me, in full sight of her brother and kissed me.
