Ben's POV

"Alisha, I'm not wearing a pink tuxedo on my birthday." I sighed, tugging irritatedly at the pink bow on my neck that made me look like a prized goat on a circus fair.

"It isn't pink, it's salmon!" she pouted. I resisted the urge to squeeze her powdered cheeks, knowing the wrath she'd bestow on me if I did. "This isn't even gonna be a formal thing. It's just a small gathering between family and close friends."

Alisha pointed a scrawny finger at me, "There is always a reason for dressing up." Looking at her salmon colored bejeweled ballerina dress, I'd say she was being serious.  I kissed her temple in defeat, "You look stunning." A flustered grin appeared on her face, the one I fell in love with so many years ago.

"Hey guys, sorry for interrupting your make out session but the guests are starting to arrive." Robin coughed. Reluctantly, I let go of my precious soon to be mate, knowing in just 3 hours she'd be all mine.

The thought of my mate brought up a certain someone's presence, or rather, lack of. "Hey, have you seen Danny? I haven't seen him since 2 days ago when we accidentally met at the supermarket."

Robin seemed hesitant to answer, "Danny...left the pack yesterday."

What the fuck.

"Good joke dude, but seriously." I chuckled, unamused.

"Actually, that wasn't a joke." Derek appeared, snaking an arm protectively on the luna's waist, "He'd planned to leave for months now."

My hands clenched into a ball, trying to hold down my anger, "..and you didn't bother to tell me, why?"

"It was his wish."

A knife pierced it's way into my chest almost quite literally. My childhood friend, my best friend, left me without a word before the most important day of my life. Again, I must ask,

What the fuck.

——

My mood for the rest of the party was pretty sore. Not only could I not focus on my beautiful mate to be, but Roux had been whining at me for the past 2 and a half hours. I honestly don't understand that wolf and his obsession with Danny's wolf.

"Could you shut up for like two seconds?" I growled at him, making a few of my friends nearby flinch. I was the largest wolf in the pack after all, after Derek. "I'd shut up once you get Siren back!" he retorted shamelessly.

The thought of Danny made me irritated all over again, "That guy left by himself. Besides, he didn't seem to feel the need to tell us anyway." Roux growled at that, "You're not the only one who've lost a friend tonight, alright?" I sighed exasperatedly.

The thought of losing Siren had made him anxious, I could feel Roux pacing around inside my head, whimpering needily for the comfort of his oldest friend. I had to resist the urge to copy him, focusing instead on the party.

In 2 minutes, Alisha's gonna be declared my mate, and this'll be the best day of my life. For some reason, my brain couldn't comprehend that tonight.

"Alright guys! The 30 seconds countdown is going to begin!"

My heart beats harder in my chest, pounding in my ear. I slowly made my way to my fiancé, a smile plastered on my face. I could see her dress illuminating at the center of the room, making her look as beautiful as the moon goddess.

"10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3"

I took her by the hand, gazing lovingly into her eyes. Yet I still couldn't feel the warm sensation I'd heard so many spoke about when they found their mates.

"2..."

My smile diminished for a moment at a sudden realization and slight regret,

"1"

Alisha wasn't my mate.
