Yo guys I just finished writing chapter 30 and got emotional by myself lmao. Anyways, enjoy this one.
Ben's POV
A fucking child.
I lost all my friends to a fucking child.
Maybe I should reconsider if I even had friends in the beginning. I grumbled to myself as I sat at the yoghurt place, stirring my melted yoghurt. I should probably stop eating so much sugar, but I was too stressed out to care at the moment.
My phone rang, annoying me even more. I accepted the call and growled harshly, "What?"
"...Somebody's in a bad mood." Alisha chuckled from the other side of the line. My eyes widened, "Oh, Alisha. Sorry," I sighed, "I've had a bad day"
"Need someone to vent to?" I smiled, "Yeah...but it's my own problem. What did you call me for?"
"Ah, right. I just wanted to ask if you still have that purple dress I wore on Derek and Robin's wedding. I can't seem to find it and I'm planning to go to a friend's baby shower tomorrow."
"Oh, I think it's still in one of the boxes you left behind. I placed them in the basement just in case you finally remembered them." I chuckled. "And you tell me this now?" she whined, "How much of it is still there?"
"I think there's still three boxes? You have so much clothes you didn't even realised three boxes full of them were missing." I rolled my eyes. "That many?" she groaned, "Alright, Stan and I'll drop by your place later to pick them up. Guessing your keys are still below your window?"
"You know it" I chuckled. "I still think it's a miracle we never got robbed in the past with your terrible hiding skills." she sighed. "I mean, everyone knew we were the pact's guard leaders so pretty sure no one would want to rob it in the first place."
"Yes yes, you're the all mighty leader and temporary beta, thankfully" she whispered the last part. "hey, I'm a pretty dependable beta! At least better than that guy Danny recommended."
"What's wrong with Peter? Sure he was terrified of everyone and worked at the speed of a sloth, and didn't know how to conduct a proper meeting which slowed everyone's progress down significantly and even once destroyed all of our files because he dropped his coffee on the computer, but he was a nice kid."
"...I think you hated him more than I did."
"Well, that guy was the reason my squadron had to patrol at night four nights in a row because of a scheduling error so I have some grudge, yes. And don't get me started on three years ago when he told us he spotted a rogue in the woods near Danny's old house and made us search for it the whole day. If I could squish a runt his ass would be it."
"Alright. That was a pretty shitty thing he did."
"Speaking of Danny, have you found him?"
I bit my lip, "Yeah"
"That's great! How is he? What's he been up to?" Alisha asked excitedly. "He's doing fine. He's got a family now."
Alisha went quiet, "...oh"
"He also hates my guts, and Robin and Derek has fallen in love with his daughter."
Alisha coughed awkwardly, "....You found him! That's great news!"
"...Don't pretend like you didn't hear me."
"Alright, I'm going to be honest with you. When you told me he was probably married to a human, I didn't think much of it since I thought you'd still have a chance. But now that I know he has a daughter with her...I'm not too sure you should be trying to win him back."
"Wow, thanks for the encouragement, dear."
"Hey! We may had been married for three years but right now I'm your and Danny's friend first and foremost. And what I want is for you and him to be happy. You can't just selfishly appear suddenly and take away the life he'd made."
I sighed, knowing she was right. I'd been here for two days and I've probably fucked his life all over again. "...I hate it when you're right."
"I always am" I rolled my eyes.
"How's things with Stan? Have you settled in your new house alright? It's been a while since we last met up in person."
I could hear her excitement, "It's been so great! Unlike us he has a great sense in style and has been helping out with decorating the house. Our house doesn't look like a barricade, which I admit kind of makes me anxious, but at least it's a decent one to start our family."
"That's great to hea-" I paused, "Wait...family?!" She giggled, "I'm 8 months pregnant! I was planning to keep it a surprise."
My lips stretched so wide I thought they would rip, and I felt tears brim my eyes, "T-that's great! Oh my god...I'm-" I resisted the urge to burst into tears, "I'm so happy for you."
I could hear her sniffling and imagined her expression, "Thanks, Ben."
"Oh my god, should you be handling my workload right now? How could you tell me this now of all times. You should be in bed. Is Stan keeping you well rested? You should stay in the hospital the baby could come any moment and-"
She chuckled on the other side of the line, making me stop my ranting. I smiled at the sound of her light laughter, remembering the past we both shared. Her laugh still as childlike as it used to be. "I'm fine. Stan's been a great help."
"Do you know the gender of the baby?" She hummed, "Actually, I'm having twins. A boy and girl." my eyes widened,
"Twins?! Alisha I understand that you're the strongest warrior we've got but even you shouldn't be working while carrying twins of all things." I could practically imagine Alisha rolling her eyes, "Ben I'm serious. I know my limits, and the babies are fine. You should focus on your situation right now instead of worrying about your future nephews."
"...if you say so. Sorry, I got a bit too excited." She chuckled, "That's why I fell for you after all. You were always so sweet."
"You saying I'm not anymore?" I teased. "Hmm, you're more of a pain in the ass now. An asshole who wouldn't divorce me even though he had a mate and ended up breaking my heart four years later, and I still have to see your ugly mug at work everyday."
"Yeah, I'm an asshole" I groaned. She chuckled, "Well without you I wouldn't have met my mate so you're not all bad." I smirked, "Thanks"
"Where are you right now anyway?"
"At a yoghurt parlour alone."
"That's sad, dude."
"...I know"
Ok I really need to stop working on this one and get to my other neglected stories so I'll (maybe) update again tomorrow.
