Jisoo had lived in the village for as long as she can remember. Her son, Dongsoo, was seven and was growing right in front of her eyes. He was her pride and joy and she wanted nothing but the best for him. Dongsoo loved his mother as much as she did but he despised his father. Dongsoo's father was the late guard captain, Minho. Jisoo heard that he had been killed by the Wolves and she was overcome with a rush of relief.
Eight years ago, Minho had raped her, leaving her pregnant with his one and only child. Nobody knew about it because she kept it a secret until after his death. Luckily, she wasn't somebody the other villagers paid much attention to so it was easy for her to keep the pregnancy hidden. She never once hated her child because of who his father was. She fell in love with Dongsoo the moment she held him in her arms.
"Mama! I'm back!" Dongsoo announced as he entered their small cottage. He placed his basket of vegetables on the table and raced into the kitchen to see what she was doing. Jisoo wiped her hands on her apron and smiled at the sight of her son.
"Hello, my angel. Let's see what you got." She beamed proudly as she took the basket and emptied its contents. She found lots of carrots and potatoes and a few tomatoes and one ginormous head of lettuce.
"Very good, Dongie! We can make a salad with this lettuce and I have some beef we can roast with the carrots and potatoes! We'll have a big feast!" She cheered, making her son smile happily.
As the two worked on preparing dinner, Dongsoo decided to tell his mother about something he saw in the Forest.
"Mama, when I was gathering the vegetables, I saw something in the Forest. It looked like a big, brown dog. Was it one of the Wolves that killed Papa?"
"Maybe. I've never seen one of them but it would be nice to meet the creatures that saved me." Jisoo said softly.
"Will we go see them?"
"You know what? I like that idea. We should. After dinner, we'll go say hello." Jisoo smiled happily as she finished up chopping up the vegetables before putting them into a pot with the now seasoned beef.
An hour went by before everything was ready. The two ate till they were full before gathering the dishes to wash later and leaving their cottage. They walked to the edge of the village where it met the Forest before staring into it for a bit.
"Ready?" Jisoo asked, tightening her shawl around her shoulders as Dongsoo held the lantern up. He smiled and walked forward into the Forest, holding tightly onto his mother's hand.
After what seemed like an hour, they stumbled upon a house in the middle of the Forest. The front porch light was on and it look a lot more modern than most houses in that area. They walked up to the door cautiously before knocking on the door...
