(Shawn's POV)
I woke up to bright sunlight streaming in through the windows. No, actually I woke up to the sound of Brian yelling in my ear. Not as nice, but just as effective.
"I'm up, I'm up," I mumbled and stuck my pillow over my face. After a minute I got out of bed, and went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. Everyone else was already awake, so I had to hurry. Breakfast was basically the same as dinner except no dessert or welcome speeches.
"Okay, so every cabin is going to be assigned a counselor for the hike this morning. Cabin 1 you have Monica, Cabin 2 you have Bitsy. Cabin 3..." I looked up from my food when I heard out cabin called. Our counselor was a tall brown haired lady who didn't look like her name at all. I mean she looked nice, but definitely not Bitsy. We all finished eating and cleaning up, and then Bitsy led us out of the dining hall. We split up there, Mr. Silvers went down the trail that led back to our cabin, and we turned and went down the one to the left that went around the lake. It was a lot of walking and listening to Bitsy talk about the camp or nature or the wildlife. Then, when it started to get a little darker, Bitsy gave us an assignment.
"Let's make a fire. You two," she pointed at Abby and Nicki, "why don't you go get some grass. You," She pointed at Jack and Allen, "rocks. And you four, you have the most important job. Firewood." Bitsy went with the girls to help them find the right grass, and we turned down towards the lake.
"Ready to get some firewood?" I said, fake-enthusiastically.
"Let's go!" Isabel responded the same way. I looked over at Summer. She looked so tired, like she didn't get much sleep last night. I wondered if she was okay. I saw her and Isabel whispering a little behind me and Brian. They both looked nervous.
Eventually we reached a spot with a lot of fallen branches, so we started picking some up.
"So what do you thing about this place? It's kinda weird but I like it," Brian said.
"Yeah, that's because you're weird," Isabel mumbled. I tried not to laugh. Brian just pouted.
"Hey Shawn can I talk to you?" Summer suddenly blurted out. "Privately?"
"Sure," I was confused, very confused. What did Summer need to tell me? I followed her into the woods a bit where the others couldn't hear.
"I couldn't lie anymore, I needed to tell you," she looked really almost scared. "Listen Shawn, I like you, a lot, as more than a friend. I understand if you don't feel the same way, but I wanted you to know." She looked down at her feet. For a moment I stood there taking it all in. Then I thought I realized what was going on.
"Did Brian put you up to this? Oh that little... He really thought that I would fall for that?"
"What? No, Shawn-" Summer stuttered.
"I'm sorry Summer that Brian made you do this, he is so annoying," I shook my head.
"Are you serious?" Summer was starting to look annoyed. "Nobody put me up to this. This was me. And I'm telling the truth, I'm in love with you Shawn." I was speechless. What? I didn't say anything.
"Well do you have anything to say?" She looked at me. I still didn't say anything.
"Please say something..." she pleaded. I still said nothing.
"Wow. So I finally get the courage up to tell you how I feel, then you first blame it on Brian, then not say anything?" She waited. I tried to speak but nothing came out of my mouth. "You know what, fine," She turned and walked away from me, down the path. And I didn't call after her. I let her go. Eventually I couldn't see her anymore so I just sat down and put my head in my hands. Then Isabel and Brian ran over. They must have heard us talking.
"Which way did she go?" Was all all Isabel said. I pointed and she ran.
"Dude, you messed up," Brian said, "Why didn't you just tell her you like her too? Everyone can tell." I didn't respond to him. What had I done?
