It Started With a Song [Shawn Mendes]

(Summer's POV)

"Ready?" Shawn asked me. I took a deep breath and nodded. He took my hand and we walked downstairs into the living room, where everyone was hanging out. Allen came over, glanced at our intertwined hands, and then hugged Shawn.

     "Hey man, I haven't seen you like all day!"

     "Yeah, sorry, I was a little busy." Shawn glanced at me and I blushed. "But happy birthday man, you're an adult now! And you're older than me!"

     "Thanks! Wanna come sit with us?" He brought us over to a small group of his friends, including Alexia, Brian, and Isabel, who was laying on Brian happily. When she saw me and Shawn she smiled even bigger and nudged Brian. We sat next to them on the couch and listened to everyone talk about what they would do once they got out of high school. It was pretty interesting, I always loved dreaming about the future. Eventually, all the talking made me thirsty so I got up to get a drink. As I was filling my cup in the kitchen Alexia came up next to me.

     "Soooooo..." 

     Oh no, I thought.

     "I saw you guys holding hands. Are you and Shawn together now?" She asked excitedly. 

     "Yes, we are," I responded a bit coldly. Then Alexia did something unexpected. She hugged me really tightly and squealed "Oh I'm so happy for you guys!" She seemed genuinely happy and excited. For us! Me and Shawn! I was really surprised. I realized that I had judged Alexia the wrong way. She was actually a really nice, cool person. I think I just made a new friend. 

     I laughed and said, a little more nicely: "Thank you!" When we got back out to the living room, Brian and Isabel were gone. I looked at Shawn questioningly. He whispered in my ear that they had gone on a walk/date around town. I felt a little disappointed that Isabel had left me here, but at least I had Shawn. Come to think of it, she probably meant to do that. I wouldn't be surprised. I sighed but quickly forgot about it. When we all got bored of talking we took out some board games and played like 5 of them. I was always on a team with Shawn, and I think that everyone there noticed. I even saw Shawn's friend Jack wink at him once. We ordered pizza for dinner and watched a movie. It was only the small group of us because a lot of people had already left and weren't staying the second night. I decided I liked it better that way. Brian and Isabel can back at around 9:00, but went straight upstairs saying they just wanted to hang out and maybe watch a movie up there. I didn't really take much notice of it, I was having too much fun. At 10:00, we were all so tired that we were basically falling asleep while talking. We said good night and me and Shawn tiredly walked upstairs. 

        "Goodnight!" I waved at him and slowly opened the door to my room. "Shaaawwwnn!" I immediately backed up, still looking in the room. He ran out of his room and over to me.

        "What's wrong?" He looked concerned. I pointed at the bed and laughed. Isabel and Brian had fallen asleep watching a movie and the tv was still on. Shawn looked and laughed too. I tiptoed in and turned the TV off, then went back out and closed the door as quietly as I could. 

        "Guess I'm camping out on the couch," I shrugged and began to walk towards the stairs.

        "Hey, Summer, you could sleep in our room if you want." Shawn offered and started to play with his hands nervously.

        "That would be easier, but...."

        "I mean, it's okay if you don't want to, I totally understand-"

        "No, Shawn, I was just joking! That would be great, thank you!" I smiled.

        "Oh! Okay," Shawn looked relieved. We went inside his and Brian's room and I started to look for an extra blanket and arrange the pillows on the floor. "I don't want you to be uncomfortable," Shawn said.

        "Oh, I'm fine," I responded.

        "No, seriously, you should actually get some sleep tonight." He paused. "You could sleep in the bed with me," he said slowly. "but only if you want to," He added quickly. 

        "Well I'd rather not sleep on the floor sooooo..." I got up off of the hard wood floor and walked over to the bed. "scoot over!" I jumped on the bed next to Shawn. He laughed and made room for me. We got under the covers and I turned over. Suddenly, I was face to face with Shawn. I opened my eyes wide, surprised. He smiled and kissed me. I smiled into the kiss and then looked at him. "I love you," I whispered. He pulled me into his chest and whispered back "I love you." I fell asleep in his arms, something I had dreamed of since the seventh grade, but somehow, it felt different than I thought. I guess it was because it was real.
