i sat in the passengers seat of the car next to my husband. we're on our way home from a really great date night, and i'm humming along to the music when i feel it. the baby's kicking. for the first time ever. i'm lost in my thoughts and smiling to myself. it feels like butterflies. a light tickle sensation. like bubbles popping in my tunny.
ethan was also singing along to the music lightly. he was focused on the road, with a hand on my thigh. we were so excited when i told him about the pregnancy. he started crying, tears of happiness of course, but he was ecstatic for the birth of our first child. i'm 20 weeks pregnant today, and i had been waiting for this moment. the feeling of our precious child moving.
"e, give me your hand" i know he was driving but he needed to feel it now, before it stopped. "uh, ok?" yeah he was confused, but after taking his hand from my thigh and placing it on my belly, he knew exactly what was going on. he didn't say anything, but quickly pulled over to the side of the road, putting the car in park and turning the emergency lights on.
he now put both hands on my belly, looking me in the eyes, waiting for it to happen again. i knew when he felt another kick, and i smiled widely at him. "that's our baby, baby" he spoke sweetly, leaning over to kiss me softly. "i'm so excited!" he squealed, exaggerating the "so". i laughed but noticed the kicking wasn't really stopping. it was an on and off thing. "the baby is going crazy e" he looked at me then at my stomach before leaning down so his face met my belly, he started speaking softly
"listen here little one. i love you a lot, but take it easy on your mommy, and don't hurt her. she's gonna be taking care of you in her tummy for a little longer and then she still has to give birth to you so calm down, ok? i love you and i can't wait to meet you"
he kissed my belly multiple times before coming up and kissing my lips sweetly too. "i think that worked" i said, feeling that the baby had calmed down now. i smiled and looked to him. "you're gonna be an amazing dad" he smiled and gently grabbed my chin pulling my face closer to his. "and you're gonna be an amazing mom" he pulled me in more, connecting our lips and we were both smiling into the kiss. this was a feeling i will never get tired of.
he pulled back and resumed to his previous position, his hand on my thigh, and we continued our way back home. i could tell he was a lot happier and neither of us could stop smiling. i was so ready for this journey with him, and so excited to see what else we will be blessed with in our life together.
