Light As A Feather

"I thought you said it was ten minutes!" I whined in the front seat of the car. I'd been sitting in this damn jeep for at least half an hour now. Forty minutes actually; we had to hire the car first. Anyway, since Calum had told me that the mall was just "round the corner" I threw on one of my black see-through beach dresses over my bikini and my battered Converse. As for my hair...well, lets not go there.

"I've had a change of plan." Calum said simply, turning a sharp corner, causing the jeep to lurch forward. I clung to the seat belt tightly. "Jeez, you trying to give me whiplash?" I screeched uncertainly, and Calum just chuckled, one hand on the steering wheel. "Chill out Soph, its not like we're gonna crash or anything."

Crash. That word. I hated it. I squeezed my eyes tight as the flashbacks just flooded through my brain again. The screeching of the brakes. The crunching of bones. The sound of my own blood curdling scream...

"Soph!" Calum's voice brought me back to reality. I opened my eyes, breathing hard. We'd pulled up on the side of the road; Calum had stopped the car. He was glancing over at me anxiously. "You okay?"

I let go of my belt, straightening up and mopping my forehead. "Why have you stopped?"

"Why were you whispering to yourself?" He fired back, looking at me with worried eyes. I shook my head, leaning on my elbow to look out of the window, away from him. "Can we just drive please?"

He hesitated for a moment, but I felt him push down on the hand brake and the car started up again. The rest of the journey was silent, but I could see Calum in the wing mirror, how he kept glancing over at me, like I was gonna vanish any second.

When we finally pulled up at the mall, it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. It was like Westfield back in London, only it was in Spain. I hopped out of the jeep and slammed the door behind me, marvelling the building. Calum locked up and shoved the keys into his pocket, walking around to me.

"It's just like Westfield." I stated, turning around to face him. Calum scrunched up his nose. "Westfield?" He repeated, clearly confused. "What's that?"

I grinned smugly, walking away from him. "It's a field in the west of London." I lied, giggling to myself. I heard Calum pause behind me, before hurrying to catch up with me. "Really?!"

As soon as we set foot inside the mall, I went crazy. I'd always loved shopping, even as a kid, when Mom and Dad used to go and shop for boring things, I'd dodge in and out of the aisles, hiding behind clothes and talking to mannequins. As I started to get older, I started to love shopping more and more, especially when I moved into women sized clothes, since there was so much more choice. I started to care more about my style; I'd go on a mini shopping spree almost every Saturday with Anna.

Some people moan about clothes shopping, how slinking around a mall for hours on end kills your feet. Not me. I loved it. I dragged Calum around the mall all afternoon, darting in and out of different shops and trying on nearly every item of clothing in there. We had to laugh at one point, when we were spying on an old lady that was trying to buy a crop top. Calum walked up to her and told her in Spanish that it didn't really suit her, and she went ballistic, red in the face and flapping her hands at us.

I managed to buy a few bits and bobs. I picked up some new makeup, including a new red lipstick, which Calum insisted that he wanted to try. He walked around the shop pouting after that, earning a load of funny looks from people. I also found two beautiful strapless beach dresses, one blue and one white, along with two new flannel shirts, a pair of dyed studded denim shorts, a load of new floral hairbands and a brand new pair of diamante sandals. All of which, Calum payed for. I didn't want him to, but he insisted.
