I was convinced my parents hated me, I mean what other reason would they have invited 'him' to come and live with us? It's bad enough that Clévon was going to be finishing his senior year here but why on earth did he have to come too? Y'all know us Cunninghams most of us are rational people who don't like drama but then there's the other side of the family that just..... let's be honest they attract drama and Joseph Cunningham was the worst, we didn't even talk about him because he was so damn bad. On top of all that, Quran was leaving.... that was worse than anything because I felt like he had just got here and now he was heading back to Ohio, I really wished he was staying or his senior year but we couldn't always get what we wanted. I walked out to the car and he seemed irritated about something, whenever we got to where ever it was that Jacobi was taking us I'd have to pull him to the side and see what was going on. I slid into the back seat and Quran gave me a quick kiss before turning back towards the window, yeah something was definitely wrong because I could feel it in his kiss.
"Ayy you good?" I asked and Quran nodded.
"Yeah, I'm just tired I couldn't really sleep after you left last night. I got a lot on my mind but we'll talk about it when we're not around...." Quran nodded towards August and Jacobi, them two were annoying as fuck, Jacobi was supposed to be driving but he wasn't focusing on the road, which is understandable considering he had his tongue halfway down my cousin's throat (in case y'all missed it that was sarcasm). "Cobi, pay attention to the road....." Quran said causing Jacobi and August to start laughing.
"Y'all go ahead....." I said to August and Jacobi as we pulled into a parking spot, once they walked into the restaurant I pulled Quran to the side and forced him to look at me. "Aight man what's going on with you? Last night you seemed fine but now.... you just seem depressed."
"I really don't wanna leave here.... when I first got here this place seemed like hell and now, now it feels like home. Maybe it's because I've only been home once but even when we went back it only felt like home because of my mom and Poochie. There's nothing up there for me but bad memories, here is like a fresh start for me and I don't have to deal with....... Aight so after you left I got a call from my cousin." Quran said and I'm not going to lie I was confused.
"Jacobi?" I asked stupidly and Quran almost smiled.
"You know I have family on my dad's side right." He asked as if I were slow. "They want me to come see them over winter break and I..... I haven't seen them since my dad was killed, I've been kinda avoiding them." Quran said sheepishly. Since we've started talking the one conversation Quran avoided was his dad, sure he talked about him and about the way his dad was killed but it was all surface level stuff and considering how close he and his dad were I knew it was painful for him to talk about it so I never brought it up.
"Why have you been avoiding them?" I asked and he shrugged but I knew he was lying his ass off. "Quran if you don't wanna leave then stay... I'm sure you're mom wouldn't mind and I know Jacobi, your aunt, and uncle wouldn't mind either, although Jacobi might make it seem like he does." I said looking at him. "But you won't do that will you?" I asked and he shook his head.
"I'm not leaving my mom.... I gotta keep an eye on her and this new nigga she's dating. "Can we finish this conversation a little later? I'm fuckin hungry." He said and I nodded before starting to walk towards the restaurant but he grabbed my hand and shook his head. "I don't want that." He said smiling before pulling me into the backseat and well......
"Damn were y'all niggas discussing politics?" Jacobi asked when we walked over to the table. "Ayy you got a little...." He said pointing at Quran's mouth and he quickly wiped his face and shrugged. "In my car? Really?" Jacobi said irritated. We enjoyed our last day of freedom before having to start school tomorrow, I'm not going to lie I was extremely nervous considering that I haven't seen most of these people since before getting locked up.
