Knock. Knock.

"Calm?"

"Of course not."

Younghyun nodded, "Okay."

"I have no reason to be calm. It's not like I haven't seen my parents in a good few years and they're coming and they're about to open the door..." Jae shrank away from said door with every word he spoke, curling into himself like a hedgehog- but with a lot less spikes.

Younghyun chuckled, the warm sun beat down them as they stood outside a quaint little house with a blue door and a cobbled path leading to it. Children ran past them, laughing joyfully as they dragged less enthusiastic parents behind them.

Jae turned back to the door, bracing himself for the moment it swung open.

The door handle finally turned, gently pulling open to reveal a sweet looking lady with her hair in a bun at the nape of her neck and wearing a soft forest green cardigan over her trousers and blouse. (My mum has a cardigan like that it's so nice aha)

Despite it having been years, the smile that graced her face was like Jae had simply gone out with friends for a few hours.

He cleared his throat, "H-hi mum..."

Younghyun watched the pleasantries as Mrs. Park didn't reply, just held out her arms.

Jae fell into them, beaming from ear to ear. A small tear even threatened to fall, but for his mum's sake- he held it back.

"I'm sorry... I shouldn't have run off like that," he muttered shamefully. His mum just shook her head and shushed him, rubbing his back.

"Let's not think about that. It's past. Gone. Doesn't matter anymore."

Jae nodded shakily. He glanced up at Younghyun and smiled. The younger smiled encouragingly back, feeling joyous. Mrs. Park noticed Jae's movement and pulled off when she noticed Younghyun, instantly moving forward to greet him.

"You must be Younghyun. Thank you." She smiles, lighting up the already bright summers day as they stand in the front garden, with the constant hum of noise that comes with LA standing as comforting background music.

The inside of Jae's old home was simple yet beautiful.

The curtains were white and flowed along with the light breeze floating in through the open windows; each surface was freshly dusted and the cushions on the sofa were bright and cheerful, alight with swirling patterns and winsome trimmings. When Younghyun reached the dining table, it was littered with children's craft supplies, ranging from glitter pens to a superfluous amount of stickers to metallic card with various shapes raggedly snipped out.

But Jae had never mentioned having a younger sibling.

He looked up at Jae in confusion, expecting an explanation, only to see that Jae's expression mirrored his- confusion.

Jae opened his mouth slightly, trying to form words as he turned to face his mother.

She grimaced, before smiling weakly. After the boys didn't relent, she sighed and gave the two of them closure, "We... your father and I adopted a child." She paused, as if expecting a reaction but getting none. Her head dropped, "We'd been planning it for a while and we're going to tell you the night you left, Jae."

Suddenly Jae's face swam with guilt, "So that's what was in that envelope..." he glanced up, hoping that he was wrong, but his mother's face said otherwise.

"We went through with it, we'd already signed the paper and couldn't just take away her hope. The little girl- she'd been waiting for a while but no one ever chose her."

Younghyun stood between the mother and son, thinking it best he stayed silent. Instead his gaze flirted between the two, watching.

Jae didn't speak for a while, his focus was trained on a singular invisible thing.

Instantly Mrs. Park rushed to ease the silence, "But please don't think we were giving up on you Jae, we just-" but she was cut off when Jae finally looked up, a slight sheen over his puffing eyes. His face broke out into a smile, bright and lively and vivifying the whole room- screw that, thought Younghyun- the whole world.

He couldn't help but grin as Jae wrapped his arms around his mum again, towering over her in their embrace.

"Why- why would I think you were abandoning me? This is the best news ever. Where is she?"

His mother smiled, "Your fathers picking her up from school. They should be back any minute."

Right on cue, they heard keys turn in the door.

Jae took a deep breath, looking at Younghyun. "My dad was the main reason I left... he was also pretty homophobic. Not sure about now," he shuddered. Younghyun pecked him on the lips, smiling encouragingly.

"It'll be okay, I promise."

The elder nods, taking another deep breath. He subconsciously checks his appearance- shoelaces tied, collar straight, t-shirt ironed, hair neat (or as neat as it can get)...

Finally feeling somewhat satisfied, he waits for the predicted incoming storm, waiting to see if it'll hit.

Thank you for reading this book and sticking with it, although unfortunately we're on the home stretch to completing it- I'm not exactly sure how long left, it might even go to 100 chapters, but my ideas are drawing to a close and it's however long it takes me to finish.

I love you guys <3
