Jae and Younghyun lay side by side that night, staring up at the ceiling covered in photographs of teenage Jae and his friends, all smiling and looking like the happiest kids in the world. Their hands lay entwined between them, offering comfort for each other as their minds backtracked over the events of the day.
First came the joy and nervousness of seeing Mrs. Park. Then there was the moment when little Avery ran through the door, her fiery hair billowing behind her and her smile lighting up the room like the sun.
Jae still didn't know how to process his father's reaction.
Fear, anger, coldness. Those were things Jae had expected to feel the moment his mum left the room with Avery.
Mr. Park stared at them with stony eyes, covering up his emotions behind a brick wall.
Younghyun watched him with caution, sending a warning glare to him. Jae stood with his gaze cast low, his feet shuffling over the carpeted floor.
"I can't say I agree with it, but what can I do?"
At that, Jae's eyes darted up, meeting his father's. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it again, watching silently as Dongsik stalked over to Younghyun, who took a small step back.
"Sir, I-"
Then Dongsik paused for a moment and turned to his son instead. He reached out and grabbed Jae's arm, pulling up his sleeve and glaring at the prominent tattoo.
Jae gazed at it now, he lifted his arm up to shine it in the moonlight drifting in through the window. Younghyun saw him move from the corner of his eyes and glanced over briefly before going back to his thoughts, giving Jae's other hand a small squeeze.
Dongsik almost huffed in defeat. He'd hoped that this boy wasn't his son's soulmate, hoped that he was just a boy who in the end could mean nothing, whom could be replaced by a pretty girl.
No such luck.
He backed up, giving Younghyun a judgemental glare up and down before storming from the room. Jae let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, and relaxed into Younghyun's awaiting arms.
"O-okay... we can work with that..." he muttered.
Jae turned his head to watch Younghyun, whom had since fallen asleep. He looked so peaceful, with his ebonite hair framing his face and splayed out on the pillow beneath him. In his sleep, he unconsciously ghosted his tongue over his bottom lip, leaving it with a light sheen that glowed in the moonlight.
Jae felt a smile creep up on him, and he closed his eyes for a second. When he opened them again, he was shocked to see Younghyun's eyes open and very much staring at him.
"Why're you looking me like that?" The younger asked, his voice clogged with sleep. He held back a yawn.
Jae scoffed as he tried to hide it, "Like what?"
"Like this," Younghyun made huge puppy eyes and pouts his lips, supposing Jae had looked at him like that.
Jae lightly hit him on his shoulder, "Hey, I didn't look at you like that! I was just wondering how on Earth someone can fall asleep on their back," he made up an excuse and acted innocent, however if the lights had been on then the blush coating his cheeks would've been obvious from miles away.
Younghyun frowned, "Loads of people sleep on their back." He got a quiet grumble in return and looked over to see Jae huddling into his arm, their hands still clasped below the duvet.
Grinning, Younghyun couldn't help but coo and lean down to press a soft kiss to Jae's forehead, lulling the elder to sleep.
"Night Jae," he whispered, not waiting for a reply before he too fell into a cosy slumber.
