BLUE

I ran for what felt like hours. My legs burned along with my lungs. I was exhausted, but I kept going.

I honestly had fallen for Jake. I thought he was different than all of the other guys. He just wanted me for what every guy did though. I wasn’t about to be put in that situation. Not again.

Tears ran freely down my face out here where no one could see me. I sobbed and fell to my knees, my head in my hands.

I just want it to stop. Jake made me feel like I was worth something after Alex stopped talking to me. I fell for him, and again I made a mistake.

It was a mistake to trust him. I should’ve seen that he was too good to be true. No one would ever want me for my personality. No one.

I heard a whine from behind me. I turned to see the sleek black wolf from earlier. The wolf’s head was low, its tail tucked. It had its ears pinned down and stared at me with sad blue eyes.

I sobbed and fell onto my side. Let the wolf take me, I don’t care.

The wolf stepped forward. It kept its steady gaze on me as it crept toward me. It was three steps away when I reached out. It flinched back but reached out and touched its cold nose to my palm. The wolf licked my wrist. It turned sideways, and I could see it was female. The wolf lay down next to me, curled into my side. She leaned up and licked my chin. Still sobbing and outside of sanity, I wrapped my arms around the broad chest of the wild animal.

‘Just kill me, please.’ I begged in my mind. ‘Just end it. I’m not worth the space I take up.’

The wolf whined and pressed her head against my collar bone. I sniffled and scratched her behind the ears. She whined again. A deep throated growl emanated from her chest. I froze for a second, but then realized she was purring. Suddenly the purr turned into a rippling growl as she stood upright, in a defensive stance over me. The she-wolf’s fur bristled and her lips curled to expose pearly white dagger-like fangs. She licked her teeth menacingly. I rolled over onto my other side under her to see Alex eying the wolf, his hands up in surrender. He slowly took a knee, then went down onto both.

“Blue, why are you out here?” He asked without taking his eyes off of the wolf.

“What are you doing out here?” I asked, with twice the venom in my voice. I was losing it, defiantly.

“I heard you crying, so I came out.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.” I growled. The wolf looked back at me.

“Why are you out here.” Alex repeated.

“Like I would tell you.” I growled. “I thought we were friends, Alex. I broke my wrist trying to save you, and then you just stopped talking to me. Did I do something wrong?” I asked through tears.
