BLUE

A month had passed. Rex and Adam were able to be out of the hospital. Rex had mostly healed, while Adam was still on crutches. Both of them had to be careful of what they did. The two had become literally inseparable. Even now, at breakfast, Rex and Adam sat directly beside each other, stuffing their faces with pancakes. Jake sat beside me, opposite Adam. He had gotten over the weirdness he had taken on a while ago, while my stomach had grown. Eventually, I got over my anger at finding out I was pregnant, and now I lived for the child growing within me. I was glad that even if I didn’t have my memories, I still had the child.

Jake had been talking with me about pregnancy. He had his money on the baby being a girl, while I was on the fence. I wasn’t partial to a gender, and I had no clue what gender the baby would be. Rex was betting on a guy.

If the father of my baby had been here, I wondered what he wanted, or what he thought it would be.

In any terms, I refused to let the doctors tell me what gender the child would be, even now as I neared my three month checkup.

I cut a piece out of my waffle and took a bite. Jake sat back, staring at his empty plate. His lip piercings had closed up, because he had left them out. About a week ago, he had gone back to the tattoo parlor and gotten just a single ring on his left side. He had also gotten vibrant blue streaks in his hair, replacing the old color once it had faded out. His hair had gotten longer, as had mine. His brushed his shoulders and covered his right eye. Mine also covered my right eye, but it was much thicker and went down almost to my stomach. I always wore the contacts Rex had given me. Recently, I used them to cover my blue eye, and only had the light hazel color.

Adam brought out a can of whip cream and covered Rex in it. Rex yelled and grabbed Adam, rubbing the whip cream all over him. I laughed as Rex coated his hand and ran it through Adam’s blond hair, making it stick up as if it were gel. Rex and Adam were both grinning like idiots. Jake was looking up at them almost longingly. A sudden feeling of nausea overcame me. My glass of water was empty. I got up to get more from the sink. Gripping tightly to the counter, I filled the glass and sipped at it, my free hand resting on my growing bulge. I didn’t show very much, but it was enough that no one could doubt I was pregnant and not just fat.

Jake glanced over at me.

“Are you okay?” He asked. I nodded.

“Just a bit nauseas.” I said. He nodded and slid out of his chair, coming over beside me. Rex and Adam were still messing with the whip cream.  A pang shot through my stomach. I bit the inside of my lip and tried to focus on something else. My lower back and my stomach always hurt. I slept with a pillow supporting my back, which I hadn’t done before I was pregnant. I took another sip. Jake leaned back against the counter, his ankles crossed.

Something wet dripped down my leg. I looked down. I was wearing my favorite pair of white skinny jeans. A thick blotch of red coated my inner thigh. I frowned.

Suddenly, pain like I had gotten stabbed exploded throughout my lower stomach. I screamed and fell to my knees. The glass dropped from my hand and shattered on the floor. Jake was there in a second, grasping my shoulders. I couldn’t hear him past the ringing in my ears, couldn’t see him past the tears in my eyes. I screamed again as the pain intensified. Rex was there, behind me. I fell back and he caught me. Curled in on myself. Rex pulled me onto his lap. Jake’s eyes widened when he saw the blood staining my jeans.
