ALEX

I let her down. I knew it was dangerous to let her into my life, but yet I did anyway. Shutting her out hadn’t helped, either.

I wasn’t comfortable being so close to Crow, but she was asleep in her wolf form, her head and front paws still on Blue’s lap. Blue’s skirt had ridden up, exposing part of her garters. It was hard for me to look away. I did anyway. Still with an arm around Blue’s shoulders, I tapped Crow between her eyes with a finger. She blinked up at me.

“I need to get her back to her house. Do you know where she lives?” I asked. Crow nodded and looked around, her mouth open. She was scenting the air. The sleek she-wolf shifted into her human form. She yawned and stretched, zippering her black leather jacket and brushing her bangs out of her eyes.

“She lives in the orphanage, at the top of your street.” Crow said.

“That orphanage?” I asked.

“Yeah. The orphanage. She’s an orphan. Her parents committed suicide. I looked at her file. It had a copy of their suicide note- the self-absorbed bastards took their lives because they couldn’t stand the thought of having a kid with two different colored eyes.”

“Are you serious?” I asked. She nodded.

“Yeah. I’m serious. Now get off of the pack ground. The only reason I let you stay was because you were helping Blue.”

I gave her a grateful glance. Then, I sprinted off in the direction of my house, Blue in my arms.

I slowed once I reached the city. It was about 10:30 at night, and no one was out. The entire town was comprised of Werewolves. My father and I are the only Vampires. Snow is the only Vixen, and Blue is the only human. I readjusted my grip on her tiny body, smoothing her skirt down. She mumbled something in her sleep and curled against me more. I smiled down at her and took off again, closer to the orphanage.

I went in the front doors, immediately greeted by a glare from the receptionist.

“The hell are you doing here, leech? And with one of our girls?”

“She was at one of Jake’s parties and ran out. I found her in the woods. Don’t worry, I didn’t do anything to her, other than save her life.”

The woman’s eyes widened. She dialed a number on the phone.

“Rex, get down to the lobby right now. No, it’s about Blue. She’s with the vampire right now. Okay.” She hung up and resumed glaring at me. A few seconds later, I heard a crash. Rex came speeding out of the hallway, eyes fixed on Blue. Without even bothering to ask any questions, he took her out of my arms and raced back to what I assumed was their room.

I walked back into the cold night, tightening my jacket with every step. I knew the slayer was watching me. I knew I just put Blue in danger by saving her. I had to do what I had to do, though.

I was at the back door to my house when I turned around. Sure enough, there he was, leaning against a lamp post, bathed in the ethereal glow of the light. I shuddered and walked into my house, making sure to lock the door behind me.

Not tonight, slayer. Not now, not ever.
