"Lady Song, you'll burn a hole through the letter if you continue staring at it." Hana laughed quietly as she brushed your hair. Her comment made you flush and looked down, toes wiggling around. "You still haven't read it."
"I have too much hope. And I can't seem to calm my heart down." The letter had been in your hand all morning. If someone were to remove it from you they can surely find the indent your fingers had left on it. The white envelope smelled of fresh flowers. It was addressed obviously to you, My Lovely Lady, it read. It made you giddy and the butterflies in your stomach came alive.
"If you don't read it, I will." Hana reached down for it, but you quickly stood up. Almost too quickly, your head was spinning.
"Don't you dare." you warned.
She let out a laugh. "My Lady, please read it. You're killing yourself with anticipation."
"You're right," you sighed. Your finger gently taking the content out and unfolding the paper, careful to not ruin the ink. No matter how many letters you've received from him, the tingles in your heart never went away. Your hand was always shaking, anticipating the warm words he will sing to you.
My dear Y/N,
I cannot begin to tell you my excitement for our wedding. It will be soon my love, I promise. There's just a few things I have to take care of. I want everything to be perfect because you are deserving of perfection and everything else.
How I long to look at you. Even for just a fraction of a second, your smile will occupy my brain for days. I want so much more. You need not worry that I will forget you. That is impossible. You're like the sunset, I'll always come back just to catch a glimpse of you. You who live across the river, who is a world away from me at times. I hope my love can reach you, and remain with you until my last breath.
Until next time, my Lady. I'll love you until the sun dies.
Yours truly,
Seokjin.
Just as you thought, it was silly of you to worry about his feelings. He was the same as before, he was your Seokjin. And soon, he will be your husband. Hana was glad to see the smile on your face, even she was growing impatient with the boy across the river. Both parents had already gotten together to discuss the marriage, yet the young Master grew superstitious and delayed the wedding dates. You put up with it because you knew he was also busy with his studies and you would wait for him no matter how long it takes.
The first time you saw him, you swore you had seen an angel. He had the face and a physique of a god. But then he opened his mouth to speak and you've never laughed harder. He was good with jokes, too good for a child. He was charming, and so clever. You were completely captivated by him. So much so that you really hadn't noticed the other boy who was with him. He was taller, lankier, and an awkward conversationalist. Your mother taught you to always be welcoming so you invited the boy to play with you. He hesitated at first, especially when Madam Kim, Seokjin's mother, was around. There was something vile about that woman that you never liked. But nonetheless, she will be your mother-in-law soon.
It wasn't long until you were completely in love with Seokjin and all his faults. He would always write poems, rowed to meet you late at nights, and sing you to sleep. Those were the most magical nights of your life. Everything felt right. The son of a war hero would wed the daughter of the best doctor in the country, that's how it should be. But suddenly, the letters decreased, and then stopped for a short amount of time. He stopped rowing, and stopped singing.
Then the proposal came, and it took you by surprise. He assured you that he loves you as well but had just started studying with his uncle to become a palace minister. You admired his determination, so you told him you would wait. The letters resume, but unfortunately, the meetings did not. You didn't mind. The letters themselves more personal and poetic, as if he was a completely different person. As if now, he was finally in love with you.
You placed the letter along with the rest in the drawer of your desk. They were your most prized possessions. You pray that his feelings for you would remain the same. Just then, someone knocked on your door. Hana revealed that it was your mother, meeting for your usual sewing session. She saw the smile on your face and could only guess what had happened.
"You really love him, don't you?" Madam Song asked.
"Is that so easy to guess, mother?"
"I was like that before your father and I wed. My heart felt like it could burst with anticipation," she said, looking off somewhere that you assumed was the past.
"Mother, before you and father got married, was he ever acting weird?"
"In what way?"
"I'm not sure. Did he ever hesitated?"
"My darling, are you talking about Seokjin?"
"I'm worried that I'm not what he wants." you said honestly. "Although he reassures me that he'll love me forever, I can't help but feel that he needs something else. Someone more adventurous instead of the me who is so sheltered."
"Are you upset with us for that?"
"I could never. I know your actions are only to protect me. I would never be upset with you for caring so much about me." you argued. "But sometimes, I think about grandmother, before she passed. She always told me that I should live a wildlife before settling down. Somehow, doing this, makes me feel like I'm betraying her."
Your mother sighed, now missing her late mother. "Grandmother had opposed to your father and I's marriage, believing that we were too young and irresponsible for a lifelong commitment. And I am also fearful of that in your case. But you've shown me that you are ready and will be devoted to your husband, I can't ask for anything else."
"Do you think Seokjin will be the same? Ready and devoted?"
You waited for your mother to answer, but instead, she went ahead with her sewing.
