Night had fallen on the abandoned school. Lexi sits at her desk with her computer open, the artificial light coating her face. Only the computer screen and the lamp keep the night away as Lexi types something out, her eyes furiously darting across the page.
Derek, Peter, Scott, and Stiles watch as her phone vibrates beside her. She glances down at it but does not turn it over to see who texted her. It vibrates again; she simply pushes it away.
The third time, it rings loudly, making her jerk away from it. She mutters a curse under her breath before she picks it up. "Lexi Adams speaking," she says as she clenches her jaw.
"Come outside."
Lexi rolls her eyes but nonetheless packs up her work. "Why?" She asks as she shoves her computer and her papers into her large purse and swings it over her shoulder.
"Just do it."
Lexi sighs as she leaves the classroom. Her heels click against the linoleum floor as she exits the building. When she sees Derek leaning against his black Camaro, she hangs up the call and approaches. "What was so important?" She asks as Stiles' jeep pulls into the parking lot. "Did you bring me out here to mediate between you and the teens? Because I have been doing that all day."
Derek shrugs, his lips barely tugging upwards. "We may have a lead," he says, motioning to his car.
Lexi peaks in through the window. For a moment, her expression goes slack at the unconscious vet lying there. When she pulls away and meets Derek's eyes, she says, "You can't be serious. The vet?"
Digging into his jacket pocket, he produces a folded up piece of paper. "He knew about this. I know he was lying," he says as he hands her the page.
Lexi scans her eyes over the image as she hears the two teenage boys exit their jeep. The picture glaring up at her depicts a deer on its side with a giant spiral carved into it. She lets out a sigh, "This is what Laura called me for. I guess she never figured it out."
"Where's my boss?" Scott demands angrily. Lexi turns with a roll of her eyes as the two boys approach.
"Ever hear of subtlety?" She quips.
Stiles frowns. "What are you doing here?"
"Derek called me. Besides, I tend to work later rather than earlier."
Scott has none of it.
Derek simply gestures to the car. "He's in the back," he says.
Both boys look in. "Oh, he looks comfortable," Stiles says with a sarcastic frown. Then, both start towards the school.
"What do you think you're doing?" Lexi calls after them.
"Derek said I was linked with the Alpha!" Scott says over his shoulder. "I'm gonna see if he's right."
"He is standing right here," Derek grumbles as they disappear into the school. Lexi simply shakes her head and looks back down at the paper clenched in her fist. "What do you think?"
Lexi purses her lips, tilting her head to the side. "I think this was a warning," she replies. "One Laura should not have checked. She should've let me handle it."
"And would you?" Derek asks with his back hunched over. "Handle it? Because you just appeared out of nowhere a little too late."
"Sorry my timing wasn't the best," Lexi snaps, feeling the urge to let her claws grow. Derek's eyes flicker down to her white knuckles. "I was dealing with my family."
"Dude!" Stiles slaps Derek's arm, bringing all three wolves' attention onto him. "You're mean."
Derek narrows his eyes at the human. "My sister was just murdered and a random woman appeared out of the blue with all the answers."
