The bell rings causing Lexi to sigh. "I guess that means I have to let you go now," she says to the room full of students. "Remember the homework!" She shouts over the noise as they practically run from the room.
"Mr. Lahey, stay for a moment, will you?"
The curly-haired blonde avoids her gaze as he walks up to her desk. She simply smiles at him before closing the door to the room, She motions for him to sit down, ultimately settling beside him. "How'd you get that black eye?" She asks.
Instinctively, he raises his fingers to press against the bruised skin. "Lacrosse," he replies.
Lexi hears the skip in his heartbeat. "I'll choose to believe you," she says with a bite in her voice. "I wanted to offer you some extra help." She sighs as she quickly grabs a sheet of paper from her desk. "From what I hear, chemistry is not your best subject. I'd like to help."
"Oh, no, Ms. Adams, I'm ok—"
"Isaac, I'm giving you an out," she says as she raises an eyebrow. "Your D will become a C within a week, I guarantee. And, it will get you out of your house."
He fidgets in his seat. "I don't think I understand," he says. "I'm ok in my house."
"Sure, but I hear your social life has been lacking. You spend all of your free time in your father's graveyard or at home. Something like this could lead to paid tutoring for other students." She nudges his arm with a smile. "Which would look really good on college applications."
Isaac glances down at the contact sheet in his hands. "If it looks good on applications..." he mutters. "Can—can I think about it?"
"Of course," Lexi replies. "Take all the time you need. Just let me know. I think it will be a really good opportunity for you, Isaac." She glances at his black eye. "I don't want to hold you any longer than I have to. You can go on home."
Hiking his bag up onto his shoulder, Isaac tugs his lips up. "Thank you, Ms. Adams," he says before he leaves.
With a heavy sigh, she watches his blonde hair disappear through the halls. She herself takes her purse and the rest of her things, locking the classroom door behind her. As she walks through the halls, whispers of Kate Argent and Lydia Martin fill her ears; she cannot escape the noise even in the parking lot, where she sees Scott running off after a sleek blue car.
As she approaches her car, she pauses a good few steps away. "What do you want?" Her voice comes out chipped and broken.
Derek shrugs as he leans against her car. He can hear the brokenness in her voice. "You aren't answering your phone," he says. "Thought something happened, and I wanted to see if you were ok."
"As you can see, I'm fine." She physically pushes him off of her car, placing her purse and notes into the trunk before she grabs a dark bag that jingles with each step. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do than talk to you." She locks her car and walks away. She can hear Derek following her. "What about my last statement did you not understand?" She calls over her shoulder.
"The part where you trust me enough to tell me what the hell you are," he replies. The leaves crunch under their boots as they walk into the forest. He stays only a few steps behind her, his eyes moving between the suspicious bag and her straight back, occasionally dipping downwards.
"I'm mad at you," she says. "Why can't you just let me be mad at you?"
"Because I don't understand why."
She drops the bag and spins around, fury radiating from her. "I told you not to do it," she sneers.
Derek shakes his head. "He killed my sister."
