Derek and Scott find themselves in the veterinary clinic; Lexi stands in the corner with her arms folded over her chest and her head tilted upwards. Deaton cleans the counters as a young Scott steps out to the lobby. "This is all going to hell," Lexi says. "It's getting too complicated."
Deaton nods. "Couldn't agree with you more."
"What's he doing here?" Scott asks. Deaton walks out to the lobby as Lexi frowns, sniffing the air.
Derek's rough voice reaches her ears. "I need him."
Lexi rolls her eyes as she follows Deaton. "I don't trust him," Scott says.
"Yeah, well, he doesn't trust you either," Isaac replies, his voice heavy with annoyance.
"You know what?" Derek exclaims as Lexi steps into view. "Derek really doesn't care. Now, where's the vet? Is he going to help us?"
"That depends," Deaton says. The wolves look over at the vet and Lexi. She watches as Derek focuses on her for a moment too long. "Your friend, Jackson. Are we planning to kill him or save him?"
"Kill him."
"Save him."
Scott glares at Derek's head as he repeats. "Save him."
Lexi claps her hands and plasters a fake smile on her lips. "Well, then, let's get to work." As she walks back to the examination room, she quickly shoves papers into her purse before taking out a familiar leather-bound book. She places it beside Deaton's herbs as the boys file in.
"So, what are you?" Isaac asks. "Some kind of witch?"
Without realizing, Deaton looks back at Lexi; she begins to chuckle, her gaze landing on the book. "No, he's a veterinarian," Lexi replies. As Isaac reaches forward, his fingers barely grazing the leather of the book, Lexi slaps his hand away. "No," she says sternly.
"You have your own witch," Deaton says, still glancing at Lexi. When her expression hardens, he sighs. "Unfortunately, I don't see anything here that's going to be an effective defense against a paralytic toxin."
"Then how is Lexi immune?" Derek asks.
Lexi rolls her eyes as she kneels down below the cabinets, taking out a vial of blood. "Vampire blood. It heals too fast—much faster than werewolves. I always keep a stash with me. And no, you will not get it. I'd rather you be paralyzed for a few hours than die with this in your system. If you died..." The pain on her face is enough for the wolves to glance away. "If you turned, we'd have to call Nik, and that would be bad for everyone involved, trust me."
"We do not want him here," Deaton agrees. "What about an effective offense?"
"No, we already tried," Derek replies. "I nearly took its head off, and Argent emptied a clip into it. The thing just got back up."
"Has it shown any weaknesses?"
Derek nods. "One: it can't swim."
Lexi frowns, furrowing her brows as she leans against the counter. "Isn't Jackson captain of the swim team?" She asks; Scott nods. "That makes sense," she mutters.
"How so?" Deaton asks.
"We're essentially trying to catch two people," Lexi explains. She takes out a quarter, holding it up to the light. "A puppet." She clasps the coin. "And a puppeteer. One killed the husband last week, but the other had to take care of the wife. Do we know why?"
"I don't think Jackson could do it," Scott says. "His mother died pregnant too, and she was maybe murdered. I think he couldn't let the same thing happen to someone else."
