Derek finds himself once again at that abandoned train station with his betas surrounding him. With a heavy sigh, he walks up the stairs to where Lexi is paused before the door.
She holds a large bag of chains in her arm as she paces. "Not a good idea," she mutters. "but I don't have a better one." Suddenly, she pauses. Lifting her head up, she says, "I'm sorry you have to see them again."
Derek shrugs. "I knew it was coming."
"It doesn't mean it doesn't hurt." She sighs and lets her head roll forward. "It hurts me to if that brings you any pleasure."
"Why would that make me happy?" He demands with a twinge of anger in his voice. "What about my actions have made you think that I want you hurt?"
Without raising her gaze, Lexi says, "I took everything from you, Derek. Your memories. Your family."
"That was not your fault," Derek says softly. "Our family was not your fault."
"Mikael came here to find me." Tears line her eyes as she inhales deeply. "He told Kate to distract me by killing your family. How is that not my fault? I continue to lie to you—lie about not knowing you, and every time you ask for the truth, do you understand how difficult it is for me to avoid it? All I want is for you to know."
Derek shakes his head. "When does Mikael come?"
Lexi wipes a finger under her eye. "What?"
"All this build-up. Gerard, his threats." He steps closer to her. "When does Mikael come?"
She meets his gaze. "You'll see."
With that, she pushes past him and descends into the train station. "Goodies!" She shouts as her voice echoes off the stone walls. "I brought goodies!"
The three betas look up at her as Derek steps out from the train cart. She drops the duffle bag beside the closed trunk and crosses her arms. "Full moon tonight, and Derek hasn't taught you how to control it. Which means you're all stuck here until the moon goes down."
"You've decided to join us?" Derek asks as he mimics her posture.
"I decided that Gerard will be on the lookout," she replies. "Which means, if he can't find me, he can't find you. This also means, if one of your betas gets free, we're all screwed. So," she kicks the trunk open and pulls out a length of chain. "who's ready for some fun?"
"What is that?" Isaac asks, his eyes on the triskele painted on the box.
"It's a triskele," Boyd answers. Both Lexi and Derek arch an eyebrow at his response. "Spirals mean different things—past, present, future; mother, father, child."
"You know what it means to me?" Derek asks as he removes more chains from the trunk as Lexi unzips her bag.
"Alpha, beta, omega."
"That's right." Lexi sees the hint of a smile on Derek's lips. "It's a spiral. It reminds us that we can all rise to one or fall to another. Betas can become Alphas, but Alphas can also fall to betas."
"Even omegas," Lexi adds with a hint of sorrow in her voice.
Isaac frowns. "Like Scott?"
"Like the Original Alpha," Lexi says. "She has no pack now. Scott's not alone, he's with Derek."
"Really? Then where is he now?"
Derek narrows his eyes. "He's looking for Jackson. Don't worry, he's not gonna have it easy tonight either. None of us will. There's a price you pay for this kind of power. You get the ability to heal, but tonight, you're gonna want to kill anything you can find."
