Lexi sits alone at a virtually empty diner. She wears a faded leather jacket, hugging the material close to her body as a waitress places a steaming cup of hot chocolate before her and a coffee across from her. Dark circles hang under her eyes as she graciously drinks.
She glances around at the other patrons: an old drunk by the counter, a heartbroken teenager drinking her second milkshake, and a boy with a hood over his face with books scattered around him.
When the bell above the door rings, Lexi glances up. Even after everything that's happened, she still feels herself relax when she sees Klaus' blond curls. He sends a dazzling smile to the waitress before he walks up to Lexi's booth. "Hello, sister," he grins.
Lexi jumps up and hugs him tightly, inhaling deeply as she sighs. "I've missed you, brother." She pulls back for a moment, returning his smile. "We have a lot to discuss," she says.
His grin drops as they both slide into the booth. "Thank you for the coffee," he says as he takes a sip. "Just how I like it."
"I know," she replies. "After you made me redo it a million times this summer."
He shrugs. "Now, what's this about Mikael?"
She shakes her head as she leans forward on her forearms. "First, I want to know. Is it true?"
He narrows his eyes. "Is what true?"
"Mother." He leans back in the seat as he clenches his jaw. "Did you kill her?"
"Who told you such a ridiculous tale?"
"Rebekah," Lexi replies softly. "She called me sobbing. Told me Elena had told her that you killed Esther. At first, I didn't believe it—I thought she was lying to manipulate our sister. And then, Rebekah sent me pictures of that old cave we used to hide in as children. The one where we carved our history." He pales. "It says the hybrid killed the Original Witch. Is that true?"
He clears his throat. "I think you know the answer to that."
She lets her back hit the seat as she sighs. "I never did think Mikael could do it." Pressing the tip of her nail against her lips she inhales. "You did us a favor, Nik. I see that, but Rebekah does not. She is very upset."
"Why would I care?" She can see the concern in his eyes; a single arched eyebrow is all Klaus needs before he sighs. "You're right. I care."
"Finally, he admits it," Lexi says with a small chuckle. She raises a hand, signaling the waitress. "I need some booze for this talk," she says as she asks for a glass cup.
"Can it not be whiskey?" Klaus asks.
"Nope," she replies as the waitress returns. The moment the woman looks away, Lexi reaches into her coat to grab her flask: she pours the bronze liquid into the cup with a content sigh. When the liquid passes her lips, Lexi lets her eyes close.
She sees Talia's face.
"A while ago, Elijah and I were in Ohio," Lexi says as she trails her finger over the lip of the glass. "I had a pack and a sire with me. Vivian. And hunters appeared. Elijah and I—we tried to contain the situation, but..." She glances out the window as she sniffles. "They killed everyone."
"What do hunters have to do with Mikael?" He asks.
"Patience, brother," Lexi chides with a fake smile. "Elijah killed two of them, I killed the rest, leaving one for last. Gerard Argent." Somewhere deep in her mind, she hears someone's heartbeat quicken, but her pain of retelling the story is too much. "Before I could finish the job, someone threw a knife in my chest."
Klaus nods. "The hunter knows Mikael."
"Not only knows him. Gerard maintained contact with him," Lexi replies. "Elijah and I escaped, to say the least. We split up. Elijah went off to Venice, I went to California and met a lovely family." A soft smile spreads over her lips. "They were kind, and they understood the fear of being hunted."
"Wolves," Klaus says as his eyes widen.
As her chest deflates, she takes another long sip of whiskey. "I lived with them for almost thirty years before Mikael found me again. He killed them—all of them." She can't tell if he can see through the lie. "Using Gerard's daughter to do it."
"I don't understand why I need all of this backstory."
"She burned them," Lexi says, her voice tight with rage. "There were human children in that house, and Mikael helped them burn." She runs a hand through her hair. "But, fine. I'll skip to the important part. I was so heartbroken, I put him down."
Klaus' expression goes slack. His jaw hangs open as he stares at her. "You what?" He asks.
"I wrapped my fingers around Mikael's heart, I slowed it to a point of no return, and sealed him in a tomb," Lexi says. "Only I know where. Plus the witch I got the spell from.""Why didn't you kill her?" Klaus seethes. "Only you would ensure no one finds him—"
"Do you want to argue with me?" Lexi arches an eyebrow. "Really? After what I just told you?"
A growl erupts from Klaus' throat. "What did you expect, sister? Damon Salvatore knows of Mikael's existence—if he finds this witch—"
"What do you mean, Damon knows?" Lexi asks with wide eyes. "When did you find this out? They only just now found that bloody cave."
Klaus leans back against the seat, running a hand over his jaw. "The night you left, Damon attempted and failed to kill me, as usual." Klaus glances around the diner. "And he mentioned Mikael."
Lexi barely resists slamming her hands into the table. "And you didn't think to tell me? Let me know?"
"Mikael's not interested in you," he replies. "He never was."
"He knows what I am, Nik," Lexi says, her voice lidded with fear. "He saw my eyes. He knows. He always thought it was you, ever since New Orleans. He thought you were the Original Alpha."
Klaus scoffs. "Obviously not. If Mikael thought I was the Original Alpha, what did he think you were?" She simply stares at him; more color flees from his skin. "He didn't know?"
"Now, he does!"
"You're the bloody Original Alpha, Lexi!" Klaus shouts. Lexi shrinks in her booth as the waitress glances over at them. "I'm the bloody hybrid."
Lexi feels her throat close up. "He knows we're both wolves, Nik," she whispers. "and if Elena finds him, we're dead."
Klaus looks up at her with furrowed brows. "And what of this hunter? Is he still alive?"
"Unfortunately," Lexi replies as she shifts in her seat. "He's a roach."
"What's his name again? I'll take care of him—"
Lexi reaches out and takes Klaus' hand before he can leave the booth. "You will do no such thing. He's mine," she growls, her eyes flashing blue. "He murdered my pack and killed Vivian to spite me."
"Then why haven't you done anything?" Klaus asks, genuine curiosity mixing with veiled concern.
"Would you like to ignite a war? I don't think so," Lexi replies. "I have to catch him doing something not even hunters would approve of. Once he's disgraced—once he has no one left—then, I'll kill him. And my plan is in motion, don't worry."
Klaus relaxes his shoulders as he stands. "Take care of the hunter, Lexi. Before I am forced to find him myself."
"You don't have to remind me how important it is that Mikael remains buried," Lexi says as she slips out of the booth. "Now, go deal with your hybrids. I have others to look after."
Looking her up and down, he sighs. "Take care, sister."
As always, these sibling relationships are so CUTE!
Hope you enjoyed!
