You heard Sarah's breath hitch behind you, it was then that you realised you had worded your answer wrong, and the fact you hadn't continued talking after the first word.
"Actually, she's my fiancee..." Sarah's body moved closer to you, her hands resting on your waist. Her touch offered you some reassurance that Sarah was there for you, that she wasn't leaving or running away. Her support was all you wanted, and she was ready and willing to give you all she had.
You watched as your mothers fists clenched around her bed sheets and her face turned a deeper shade of red; her ears lighting up to match. She looked the same as she did when you told her you were gay, so very angry. Tears were slowly building up, yet you refused to let them fall, you wouldn't give her the satisfaction.
"I want you to go. Now."
"Because I'm in love? Because I'm happy? Because you're too selfish and ignorant to accept that people can love who they want to? Our time on this world is only short, and quite insignificant. But this woman right here?" You pointed to Sarah, who had made her way to the side of you. Ready to take a hold of you if you were to fall in tears, or hold you back if your anger became too much. It wouldn't be the first time you had argued with someone who disagreed with a person's choice to love, many drinks had been thrown at people who had pissed you off. "Shes my story. She's significant, she makes my little time here worth every second. And if you're too self-absorbed to take the time to realise that Sarah is the best thing to ever happen to me... then I feel sorry for you."
You had never felt stronger in your life, finally standing up to the woman who had teared you down so far you weren't sure if you'd ever get back up again. But there you were, showing her that you were there, loud and proud.
"You're the biggest disappointment in my life. I should've listened to my mother when she told me to abort you. The worst mistake I've ever made." Her words stung you, pulled at your insides. You never thought your mother would say those things to you, her only daughter, that your preferences would offend her so much. Without even thinking about it, your feet moved you backwards, increasing the space between you and the woman in the bed. You were sure you would've run out of the room if Sarah hadn't taken a hold of your hand and kept you still, leaning into her body.
"You're a disgusting woman! This is a changed world ms l/n, and it will keep changing, regardless of people like you. Y/n is the most selfless, generous, talented, loving person I have ever met. And you are missing out." You watched in awe as Sarah stood up for you, fire was burning in her veins and it was all for you. You're own little firecracker. You didn't need anyone else if you had Sarah.
"Let's just go Sarah." You pulled Sarah out of the room, and continued on your way back to car, not stopping for one minute. It was setting in that you'd never see your mother ever again.
Sure she was a bitch, and she hated you, you hated her a bit too. But all those memories you held with your mother, they were special too and she had loved you once, you were her precious daughter once in this lifetime. And like you had told yourself many times, she was still your mother. And she had broken your heart. That seemed to be a common occurrence in your life, a common physical state of being; just broken. You could just never catch a break.
"Hey! stop y/n, I have to show you something before we go." Sarah's hand pulled you towards a staircase that you hadn't seen before, not that you spent anytime in hospitals. Neither did you go seeking staircases either, opting for lifts most of the time, you hated stairs. So looking up at the hundreds of stairs in front of you, you gave Sarah a quizzical look.
"Just trust me"
You finally reached the top and took Sarah's hand in yours as she pulled you towards a door.
"I found this place when I was here a long time ago, we can't be here long because I'm pretty sure we're not suppose to be." That made you giggle, Sarah's nose curling up at the sound.
The door opened and you were greeted with the most beautiful view you had ever seen in your life, Sarah had taken you to the roof. The city spilled below you both, the world suddenly felt so wide and free that you almost wanted to jump. Lights glittered everywhere just like stars dropping to the earth, huge and small buildings collided in a mixture of shadow and geometry, tiny vehicles rushing along tangled lines of streets creating twisting threads of light - they all intertwined together in a magnificent mess of a dream. A breathtaking, marvellous, almost frightened dream that made you feel like some lucky living thing. It was getting late and the soon was beginning to set. You watched with teary eyes as the sun fell behind the horizon, painting the sky shades of red and pink, and you thanked God that the day had come and gone. All the pain suffered. All the hurt felt. Everything. Gone.
"Do you see those colours, love?" Sarah asked, pulling you closer to the edge. She spun you around and took her place behind you, her arms wrapping around your waist. "They are symbols. Each showing you the good tomorrow could bring. Today has been hard love,, but I can promise that I'm still here and I'll do everything I can to make tomorrow better for us."
You turned in her arms, finally letting your tears fall down your cheeks, you felt comfortable being vulnerable with Sarah. Sarah's hands automatically went to your cheeks, your face turned to kiss each one with love and appreciation for her words. She knew exactly how to make you feel better, it was like her own superpower.
"You are the strongest person I have ever met, you have this amazing way of making my heart happy, I'm so proud to call you mine... They'll always be people in this world that want to tear us down, make our love feel cheap and pointless. But what I have with you, I don't want with anyone else, so no matter what happens, I will always choose you."
You were speechless, you weren't sure what to say. You always knew Sarah had a way with words, but those ones blew you away, you knew there and then that you had never loved anyone as much as you loved her.
"I can't give the world to you, but I can promise to give you my world, I'd give anything to you if you asked... baby, you are quiet, tell me what you are thinking. I love the way your mind works."
"I don't know what to say Sar, I love you too much to form words... just, thank you. For being here."
"There is nowhere I would rather be, or nothing I'd rather be doing than be with you."
You smiled gently at Sarah before placing a small kiss on her lips. It was small but it held so much, and you were grateful you could show Sarah how thankful you were without words. You turned back around in her arms, and rested your arms on Sarah's that resided around your front.
"It's beautiful, thank you for showing me this." Sarah's chin fell onto your shoulder, her breath brushing against your neck, causing shivers to shoot up your back and goosebumps to grow upon your arms. She always pulled that reaction from you.
"I love watching the moon, it's ethereal... really beautiful." Her words were beautiful.
"You are more than the moon, even when it glows at night."
