Chapter 1
One single torch lit the night. It made its way through the camp in complete silence. It floated through a maze of x-wings and arrived at the last fighter in the row. Red and black patterns showed in the dimly lit night. The flame was lowered by a girl, one of the best pilots in the galaxy.
She climbed the ladder and crawled to the nose of her ship and stared at the stars, as she had done nearly every night prior for a long time. Blowing the torch out, she laid down on the cold metal and tried to relax.
Something felt off in the force like something was missing. Someone. And she knew who it was.
She searched the stars for her father. The great Luke Skywalker had disappeared a long time ago, vanishing to a planet she did not know how to find. When he disappeared, she hoped he wouldn't make a rash decision. But what she feared most soon came to pass, as her powerful father cut himself off from the force. When he did, she felt the burden of the galaxy rest on her shoulders as the midichlorians in his body transferred to hers. But she didn't want that. She wanted to be a pilot. But she didn't want to get cut off like her father, she wanted to use the gift she was given. But with that gift combined with her name, the force came as a reputation to uphold, one she didn't think she could.
She searched the stars for her mother, knowing she wouldn't find her. But even after her death, she was still with them. After a visit by her mother's ghost, Luke's daughter never stopped trying to find a way to bring her back. It was why her father was cautious to train her. He was worried she too would make a rash decision and turn to the dark side. Which was a fair point, considering what happened to her cousin a few years later.
Another pair of footsteps found their way to the nose of the red and black fighter. A pair belonging to a star in the resistance. But they were not there to talk to her, only to sit out themselves and stare at the moons. The timing was a coincidence, or, perhaps, not. It might have been the Force bringing them together.
The girl heard the footsteps but chose to ignore them until the time was right, which it was as soon as she heard the shuffling dissipate. She could sense the man sitting in the cockpit of the fighter across from her.
"Beautiful night, isn't it?" She asked. And it was, clear skies and perfect views to space, the one place she felt at home. She could tell the man was unaware of her presence until then from the blatant shuffle that followed her comment.
"What the hell," She heard in a whisper. "Yeah, I guess it is."
"Can't sleep either?" She asked. "Gotta say, not the best way to spend the night before a mission. You really should go back to bed."
"How'd you know-"
"Come on Dameron, it's my mission too."
"Oh. Skywalker," He said. "I didn't know you were out here." She laughed in her head at the assumption that she would be sleeping.
"Always am, every night for a while now." She said. She wasn't surprised this was an unknown fact, she was only a new addition to the black squadron.
All she got in response was a small "Oh," from the pilot across from her. He exited the cockpit and crawled to the nose to sit across from her. "What's got you up every night?"
She knew he knew the answer. "It's not important." She didn't like to talk about it. She never did. She was always quiet with things like that.
"Oh come on, if it keeps you up, it's important. What's jamming your gears?" the man said. She felt deep curiosity. She hadn't been asked that question in a long time. She always offered to help others, not the other way around. She thought that no one cared to hear her, and that was okay. With all the pain that came with joining the resistance, she felt it was her duty to help her fellow fighters, it was her honor.
"It's just," She began. She didn't really know how to finish the sentence. She didn't know how to put this feeling into words. It was a feeling, "an empty hole in the force. A missing piece in a puzzle," She said aloud as she formed the words in her head.
"Your father?" He guessed. He knew who her father was, his reputation, the burden that must have fallen on her shoulders when he disappeared.
"Yeah," She said. "And maybe with this map, I can find him. I have to. For Leia," She said. She knew Leia didn't take her missing brother lightly, just as she didn't.
"Look, I know it isn't my business, but what happened to him? Rumor is you were there when he went missing. When his student-"
"You know what Dameron," She stopped him before he finished his sentence. "I'm gonna go to bed, you should too. Important mission tomorrow, be there." She tried to end the conversation there. She shuffled up and off the nose of her x-wing, dropping to the ground. She started to walk away when she heard his boots hit the ground as well.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I'm sure it's a sensitive topic," He shouted after her. She stopped and let her head fall back. "Okay, I'll drop it." Thank god he took the hint, she thought to herself. "I'll walk you to your quarters." She turned to him. Guess not.
"I can find it myself thanks, I've lived here longer than you," She said, raising her eyebrows. She didn't need an escort to her own quarters. She knew where she lived. She turned back around and started walking away again.
"Okay, okay." He chased after her, noting her clothes in the dim moonlight. She hadn't changed from her day attire. Clearly, she had no intent to go to sleep any time soon. "Look, obviously neither of us can sleep. Let's just get to know each other before tomorrow." He said.
"Why would we need to do that?" She asked, not turning to look at him. He tried to say something, but she soon interrupted him. "Goodnight Dameron," She said. He stopped.
"Bye Skywalker," he said. "Damn, it was worth a try," he muttered.
Unbeknownst to him, she heard his comment and smiled. "That guy is so annoying." She said, hanging her head. A sliver of her liked him. He reminded her a lot of who her cousin used to be. Curious, funny, considerate, ambitious. Only she hoped Poe's ambition wouldn't lead him to abandon his family and join the dark side.
When she arrived at her quarters, she searched the force to feel him before she entered her room. She could feel him in his room, laying in his bed, unable to sleep, wishing he had company. She rolled her eyes and let go of the knob to her room. "You are so desperate, Dameron." She turned around and began to walk to his room.
