Chapter 26
"General, the reconnaissance report on the enemy base is coming," A First Order General said.
In a holding cell, a woman woke up to her arms restrained in a standing bed. Rey was on Starkiller Base. She looked over to see another person. They had a mask on. Kylo Ren was standing, looking at her. He was fascinated by this woman. The force radiated from her, but she was untrained.
"Where am I?" She asked.
After a moment of dramatic silence, he answered. "You're my guest."
"Where are the others?" Rey pressed further.
"You mean the murderers, traitors and thieves you call friends?" He asked, staring at her. "You'll be relieved to hear that I have no idea."
Rey tried to understand him. She looked at his mask, studying it for something, she didn't know what.
"You still want to kill me," Kylo Ren muttered.
"That happens when you're being hunted by a creature in a mask," Rey spat the words at him. Kylo Ren stopped talking and considered his options. Finally, he arrived at a decision only Ben could have. He reached up and removed his mask, revealing his face.
Rey was stunned. There was a man under that mask. She always assumed he was a droid, not imagining that any person could be so cruel to so many people. She realised she had let her guard down, and resumed the illusion of confidence.
"Tell me about the droid," He ordered.
"He's a BB unit with a selenium drive and a thermal hyperscan vindicator -" She rambled, but he didn't let her finish.
"He's carrying a section of a navigational chart. We have the rest, recovered from archives of the Empire. We need the last piece. And somehow," He paused, looking closer at her. "You convinced the droid to show it to you. You. A scavenger," He insulted, trying to crack her.
Rey was confused as to how he knew who she was, but she didn't let it control her.
"You know I can take whatever I want," He said, getting even closer. He was drawn to her, something was lightly pulling him, but it wouldn't stop him from trying to impress his master. It wasn't enough to stop him. So, he dove into her mind. He raised his hands to search her mind, and he did.
The first thing he found was something in himself. Recognition flashed in their eyes, feeling something in the other that they felt in themselves.
Then the second layer. Rey struggled, but Kylo Ren was already in. "You're so lonely," He searched further. "So afraid to leave," He found and she felt her desire to stay on Jakku, she thought her parents were coming back.
"At night, desperate to sleep," He continued the search. "You imagine an ocean. I see it," He pictured a beautiful ocean with something in the middle. "I see the island," He said.
Rey continued to fight him, to try to get him out, but to no avail. Tears soon pooled under her eyes. She tried to break the restraints, but they wouldn't tear.
"And Han Solo. You feel like he's the father you never had," He found his father in her mind. "He would've disappointed you."
"Get out of my head," Rey growled. Kylo Ren leaned in closer.
"I know you've seen the map. It's in there, and now you'll give it to me," He said. "Don't be afraid. I feel it too," He mentioned the fear he had inside him. Maybe, by telling her about the fear, she would stop struggling, for it was all in vain. He would get what he wanted.
"I'm not giving you anything," Rey said, building up strength she didn't know she had.
"We'll see," He dug further. But with that, Rey was pounding against him, pushing him out.
Rey's body was trembling from pain, but she continued to fight. There was someone in her head, and she was going to get them out.
Kylo Ren realised too late. Rey was pushing him out so quickly, she had inadvertently found herself in his mind. "You," She drew from the strength she now found in her body. "You're afraid," She felt energy coursing through her veins. "That you will never be as strong as," Found it. "Darth Vader!"
Kylo ren stumbled back and Rey released her grasp on his mind. Rage fueled him as he turned to inform Snoke of her actions.
"This scavenger, resisted you?" Snoke's giant hologram sat in it's throne. Kylo Ren was standing in front of him, his mask to the side.
"She's strong with the Force, untrained but stronger than she knows," He said, remembering his old master, Luke. He had told him of his untrained power before.
"And the droid?" Snoke drew Kylo Ren from his own head now.
Kylo Ren hesitated, which was to his downfall. "Ren believed it was no longer valuable to us," A voice said from the doorway. Kylo Ren turned around to find his least favorite General.
"That the girl was all we needed. As a result, the droid has most likely been returned to the hands of the enemy. They may have the map already," Hux finished his thought, eager for Snoke to respond to Kylo Ren's treachery.
"Then the Resistance must be destroyed before they get to Skywalker," Snoke ordered, visibly furious at his apprentice's actions.
"We have their location. We tracked their reconnaissance ship to the Ileenium system," General Hux informed the Supreme Leader.
"Good. Then we will crush them once and for all. Prepare the weapon," Snoke gave his penultimate order.
"Supreme Leader. I can get the map from the girl. I just need your guidance," Kylo Ren promised.
"If what you say about this girl is true, bring her to me."
Rey continued to struggle long after Kylo Ren left the room. But instead of someone inflicting pain on her, she was inflicting it upon herself. Her mind was racing so fast it physically hurt her to think of what had just happened. There was no way in Hoth that she could have done that by herself - or was there?
An idea passed through her mind, and she decided to try it. A myth went around Jakku from old pilots that lived during the Jedi Order's prime. She had thought they were just myths, but the more she thought about it, the more her current position made sense.
So, she tried the one thing she could think of - a jedi mind trick. It was the one thing she had actually specifically heard of, and it was just the trick.
She reached into the force that fed her strength just minutes ago.
"You will remove these restraints. And leave this cell, with the door open."
