Chapter 2

She walked up to his room but his door was open.

"Knock knock," She said, turning the corner. She saw Poe laying on his back in bed with his hands supporting his head.

"Padme?" He asked, sitting up. His eyes were filled with surprise and cockiness.

"Who else?" She asked.

"So you took me up on my offer, I guess?" He asked, confidence shaping his face. She smirked.

"Don't get used to it," She responded. "Can I come in?" Shyly, she stepped into his room.

"By all means," He said. He moved back in his bed to lean against the wall. He looked at the end of his bed, motioning for her to sit across from him. She complied. He looked at her, studying her facial features. How her nose turned upward like the deer that used to be on Alderaan. How her hair framed her face perfectly.

"What?" She asked. She couldn't see much in the darkness, but she could tell he was staring at her.

"Nothing," He looked away.

"I know you want to talk," She smirked. "I could sense it all the way from my quarters," She sat up a bit more. "You're quite desperate, Dameron." She laughed.

"Whatever," He chuckled back. There was a deep pause. Both waiting for the other to talk first.

"You talk first? I talk first?" She joked. He laughed, but it was followed yet again with a pause. "Why can't you sleep?" She broke the air.

"I never can before a mission," He confessed. "Never have." She smiled the tiniest bit, finding a quippy response.

"What? The great Poe Dameron? Nervous?" She joked, but only earned a small smile.

"I'm confident on the outside, but I'm always nervous on the inside. Always scared I'll lose the title of 'star resistance pilot'," He finished. "This isn't the first time." She paused before responding.

"I'm nervous too Poe, but we'll get through it," She said. He looked up at her with hopeful eyes.

"I'm sure we will, as long as we trust each other," He said. She got what he was trying to suggest. He wanted her to talk to him as well.

"I don't know, Poe. It's just," She started. She had tried to avoid thinking about that night, but that had been much harder to do, ever since her father cut himself off from the force. "That night, Ben came to me after he killed," A tear fell down her cheek. "Everyone. He came to say goodbye. And that he loved me. And then he left me to my darkest thoughts," Poe scooted forward. "I almost followed my cousin off the planet, Poe. I almost gave in to the dark side." He got to his knees and made his way to her. He hugged her like there was no tomorrow. And she returned the gesture. "And I don't know where he is, or even if he's even alive," She started to cry now. More than just one tear fell from her eyes. "I can't bear reaching out for him. I can't risk finding him. I can't," She stopped at that. She tucked her head into his shoulder.

They sat like that for a minute or so, until they moved to sit against the wall where it was much more comfortable.

She didn't know how she had opened up that quickly. The last time she had been held like this was by her father, the day it all happened.

"I'm sorry, Poe. This isn't how I wanted this night to go," She said in between breaths. He let go of her and brushed her hair behind her ear.

"Don't apologize, Padme," He said, looking at her with such pain in his eyes. He hated seeing people like this, especially people he cared about. He realized then that he cared about this girl. He cared a lot. He had only seen her fighting, piloting, training. But he had seen her tonight. The raw Padme. She was so pure, but in so much pain. He needed to help her.

"Poe?" She said softly.

"Yeah?" He whispered. Padme dug her head into his shoulder.

"Thank you," He smiled.

"Any time, Skywalker," Padme assured. She looked him in the eyes and leaned in for a kiss. She closed her eyes but didn't feel any spark. She felt his lips on hers, but nothing more. They parted and leaned on each other's foreheads.

"Nope, that didn't work," Poe said, causing Padme to laugh.

"No, it didn't," She got up and the two laughed again. "Worth a try," Padme sat up and moved to the edge of the bed.

"We should get to sleep," She stood up. "I'll see you tomorrow, Dameron." She said. She stood up. Before she left, she reached out to see what he was feeling. Contentment, friendship, happiness, exactly what she had hoped. She walked towards the door and left the room. Before she closed it, she turned to take one last look at him before the next morning. As soon as she closed the door, her mind was a flurry of questions, mainly about how she had opened up so quickly. She walked back to her room, thinking about the day that would follow.

When the door closed, Poe fell back onto the wall. He smiled as big as he could. He was becoming friends with a Skywalker. A kind, but broken Jedi. A beautiful pilot. Someone he had been noticing more and more around the base since she arrived years ago. He laughed at their unsuccessful attempt to find romance, but friendship with her was more than enough as it was. He smiled, thinking of the day to follow.

Poe slept soundly that night. He dreamt of his future success in the resistance, defeating the First Order with Padme as his co-pilot.

Padme, however, slept terribly. She dreamt of her father and cousin. Of the night everything changed. She dreamt her cousin was ridden with guilt, he had done something horrific. He had killed his father.
