Chapter 7
The trio walked out into the open hangar. Entire troops of stormtroopers passed them as they walked. Padme practiced her patience in this stressful time. She made sure to keep her heart rate down, stay calm.
"Okay, stay calm, stay calm," The trooper of the group said. She looked to Poe, who looked to the trooper.
"We are calm," Poe said.
"I'm talking to myself," He said. Padme raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Not yet," They walked a few steps further. "Okay, go." They made their way quickly to the fleet of tie fighters docked on the wall. "This way," The trooper led them down a hallway and into the tie fighter boarding area.
"I'll go solo," Poe looked at her. "I've got this, if I'm in trouble, I'll just," She thought. "Use the force," Poe rolled his eyes. "Or," She took a step towards the fighter. "Something."
"Fine," Poe and the trooper boarded the adjacent fighter.
Padme stepped into the cockpit and soon realized it required two handlers, pilot and gunner. "I got this," She told herself, "Right?" She looked at the controls and sat down in the pilot seat. She strapped in and closed her eyes to feel for the guns in the ship. It took a while, she hadn't ever done that before. "Gotcha," She said when she found how to shoot them. She powered on the fighter and connected the comms to the other fighter. "Phoenix to Black Leader," She said over the comms.
"Phoenix?" Poe asked through the line.
"Yeah, my ship is red, my jacket's red,"
"No it isn't, are you color blind?" He asked she rolled her eyes.
"Not this one, dumbass. I left it at home, didn't want it to get dusty. Though it does bring me good luck," Padme could hear Poe huff.
"It would have been nice to bring, 'phoenix'," Poe muttered. The trooper cut in this time.
"Can you guys shut up? We need to get out of here before the control center notices," He warned.
"I always wanted to fly one of these things," He said. Nerd, she thought to herself. But she had to agree, she was looking forward to a new fighter. "Can you shoot?" Poe asked his gunner.
"Blasters, I can!" He answered.
"Okay, same principal! Use the toggle on the left to switch between missiles, cannons, and mag pulse," He started. "Use the site on the right to aim, triggers to fire!"
"This is very complicated!" The trooper responded. All the yelling was aggravating Padme.
"Boys, can we please get out of here?" She pressed.
"Alright, let's go," They both took off, but Poe's fighter lurched forward when it reached the end of the tether's slack. "Stormtroopers," She rolled her eyes. "Can't shoot, can't tie down," she said, though she was careful to not say it out loud because-
"Watch it," The trooper said.
"Sorry, didn't mean to say that," She muttered through the comms. She heard Poe chuckled at her mistake. Suddenly, she sensed something was about to happen.
"I think they noticed!" She warned, right before she saw blaster shots fire at her ship.
"I can fix this," Poe said. Padme heard the slight hint of panic in his voice, so she decided to try to lend a hand.
"Hold still," She said. She saw the fighter slow the wiggling, and she reached out to the tether, snapping it with the force. "I got it!" She shouted to the team.
