chapter 12

the car ride to the mall was dead silent. but it was a comfortable one, well to kairi it was. mattia on the inside was fuming, he wanted to drive off with kairi and go somewhere forever & never come back.

mattia stopped the car in front of the mall, his one hand on the wheel. "okay, here you go."

"thanks, i owe you." kairi says softly and shuts the car door.

mattia slowly drove away, looking at kairi walk away in his peripheral vision. he sighed and drove. his phone was blowing up with texts from his so-called friends.

he parked the car in some parking lot by the mall, checking his messages from his home screen.

from alejandro:
3 min- i'm sorry, mattia.

7 min- we didn't mean for this to happen.

3 voicemails from: alejandro
"mattia, please call me back."

"please come back, i- i mean we- are so fucking sorry."

"don't be mad, we are idiots, and you know that. come back."

from: alvaro
15 mins - i love you bro, don't end this

27 mins - i'm sorry.

mattia scoffed at the messages, feeling tears come upon his eyes, he hated this. he hated everything about this, he wanted things to become normal again.

kairi darts to the dollar store, finding the girl he met before in the window. he runs in and yells her name, "leilani right?"

the girl turns around from stacking the shelves that were behind her & smiles, "didn't think you would remember me, hi!"

"hi, i need your help." kairi trying to get his breath back and puts his hands on the counter to regain some balance.

the girl smiles brightly and nods for him to proceed.

"how do you if you like someone?"

leilanis face changed into a puzzled expression, "you never had a crush before?"

the wasian scrunched his face up, " n-no i have. i just..how do you know if you like your best friend?"

"oh," leilani smirked a bit, "is this about the boy we were talking about?"

"kind of, yes, but seriously. how?" kairi pleading for her to answer, she looked away to think a bit.

"if they protect you, if they look at you or treat you differently then everyone else....." she trailed off then her eyes widened, "or! if you get those feelings in your chest! you know what i'm talking about?"

his face dropped, "butterflies."

that is what mattia asked me. kairi thought, breathing slightly heavy to regain every information he can find.

leilani nodded eagerly, "mhm!" then she noticed his face changed, "why do you seem sad?"

kairi thought about everything, he really missed all the signs, because he was too dumb to realize it. he didn't even know what to do at this point, he just stared at the counter in front of him.

he was contemplating how he felt about his best friend, and now he knows he feels the same way.

"kairi?" she waved her hand infront of his face, quickly he blinked and looked back at her.

"you were right the whole time. how in the fuck did you do that?"

the girl giggled softly, "my gaydar can tell, my darling...so what are you going to do?"

kairi chuckled at her words, "what can i even do? our friends were trying to figure out what was going on between us and mattia got really mad-"

"-if he thought there wasn't nothing going on, he wouldn't act out the way he did." leilani states, staring at the boys big eyes.

kairi huffed and closed his eyes, why the fuck is she right?

"anyway, what did you do when they questioned you?" leilani asked.

"i-i cried a bit," kairi replied, slightly embarrassed scratching his neck.

"like i said about...whats his face, if you thought there wasn't anything going on, you wouldn't react the way you did. this whole situation needs to be figured out, because you two are the most confusing people i've ever met...or came across on." leilani laughed, and the smaller knew she was right.

"okay, and how do i fix it?"

"tell him straight up how you feel, and if you see his eyes sparkle; he likes you too."

mattia sniffled and wiped the remaining tears with his shirt sleeve, he was so fucking angry with everything. he really just needed a break.

you fucking disgrace, you fucked up again. didn't you?

the voice of his dad stings his brain like fire.

you're nothing, and you will forever be nothing.

"shut the fuck up." mattia says quietly, pulling his hair harshly with both of his hands.

at the end of the day, you'll be alone-

"-mattia! mattia!" he heard his voice called while banging on his window.
