"Hermione!" Ron's voice outside echoed through the room. "What's taking you so long? I'm starving."
"One minute!" Hermione shouted back as she hastily combed her hair and sprayed on some perfume all the while her hands shaking. She tidied her robes and realigned her tie for probably the millionth time. Looking at her own reflection in the mirror, the brunette gulped nervously.
Why am I shaking? Why do I feel nervous all of a sudden? Hermione asked herself. She's just a girl. Who wants to be your friend. She just wants to be your friend. Like any other new students.
But Samantha wasn't just any other Hogwarts student. Hermione knew that.
When she overheard about what happened with Sam's mother, Hermione immediately felt sorry. The need to comfort and protect the Slytherin girl coursed through Hermione's body. The guilt about the way she acted towards Sam was not helping.
I've been really hard on her. I shouldn't have blamed all Draco's mischiefs against her.
"Hermione!" She heard both Ron and Harry shout from the other side of the door.
Hermione exhaled a sigh, her fingers gripping the desk before her as she did so. "Comin'!"

As the trio made their way to the Great Hall for lunch, Hermione couldn't stop craning her head around, searching for one recognizable long platinum hair. But it was a futile attempt.
When they made their way to their table, Ron immediately devoured the first food he found. Harry joined him.
The other students have also arrived, who just got back from their respective classes.
Hermione absentmindedly grabbed a plate but her eyes couldn't stop glancing at the doorway. When she turned to look at the Slytherin table, Sam's presence was inexistent. As well as her brother's.
"What's the matter, Hermione?" Ginny asked as she sat beside her, noticing that something was troubling the girl.
Hermione only shook her head and went to get herself a piece of fried chicken.
What do I expect? Of course, she's still a Malfoy. Hermione thought. She couldn't even make her commitment.
The more Hermione thought about it, the more she wondered why she was feeling both frustrated and disappointed. Even though she knew she shouldn't even be feeling these things.

When they have Potions class that afternoon, Sam arrived almost a minute late, looking disheveled. Professor Slughorn was still inside his office to grab some ingredients for the potion they're making that day so the latecomer just got lucky.
The sight didn't help Hermione at all. With two buttons unbuttoned on Sam's shirt, slightly revealing her chest, Hermione prayed to the gods above that her face wasn't as red as Ron's hair.
As she sat beside Hermione, Sam whispered, "I'm sorry I couldn't make it to lunch. I forgot we got Quidditch practice."
Quidditch practice, Hermione mimicked Sam's voice in her head. Yeah, right.
Hermione couldn't understand why she was giving the other girl a hard time. But she still ignored Sam and went on reading a text from their Potions book.
"Are you mad at me?" Sam asked.
Hermione only shook her head. But she avoided Sam just the same. If she would look into Sam's eyes, Hermione was scared she'd get lost again.
