Ignoring Ron's ongoing tale about how he defeated his brother Percy over a game of chess during their break, Hermione's eyes leisurely scanned the fresh faces sitting on the front corner of each house's table. She had been doing this for two years now. It was only the start of their sixth year term at Hogwarts. Ever since becoming a Gryffindor Prefect last year, she had grown observant and wary of the new students she gets to associate with throughout the school year.

Hermione knew she wasn't strict like her parents. She didn't want to be called names by younger witches and wizards in school, especially being someone who's got a stick up her butt. She was just an organized planner, but she could be fun or flexible if she wanted to. No one had issues with the way Hermione works. Everyone looked up to her like she's their role model.

There's only one exception though -- the table next to Ravenclaw's, Slytherin. Her eyes surveyed over the seas of emerald green and one person suddenly caught her eye. An unfamiliar face, about her age or a year older, was silently eating her food, disregarding the noise around their table.

She couldn't be a first year. She's old enough to be a first year, Hermione thought.

The more Hermione focused on the stranger, the more she realized she looked somewhat similar to the boy sitting beside her. Long platinum hair. Pale skin. And then, their gazes met.

Round ice grey eyes.

Hermione immediately looked down at her plate, feeling a rush of heat in her cheeks. She turned a blind eye, settling on the thought that she wasn't just caught staring. Or so she tried.

Food. Yes, focus on the food.

Hermione tried to distract herself over a cup of chocolate pudding she took in front of her. A lovely and huge feast was before them. The first years had just finished their sorting. Any minute now, Professor Dumbledore would give his welcoming speech.

When she thought a good matter of minutes had passed by, Hermione's eyes sought to seek the new girl.

Their gazes met for the second time. Hermione quickly avoided the look and went to take a good sip from her glass of water, calming her nerves.

When she carefully dwelled to take another glance, the new girl was already staring at her, grinning from ear to ear. This made Hermione turn and peer around her, if this girl was smiling at someone else.

Convinced that the new girl was definitely smiling towards her, she craned her neck and asked Harry.

"Harry, why is that new girl beside Draco staring at me?" Hermione began to ask, hesitating to eat another piece of food, suddenly becoming conscious if she had something on her face or if she had eaten something and it stuck in her teeth.

"Mm, I don't know," Harry responded, trying his best to get a good look at the new girl without said girl noticing. "She looks beautiful though... come to think of it, she does look very similar to..."

Ron had now stopped talking and noticed that the two were engaged at something else. He also turned around to take a look, curious on what they were whispering about.

"Stop it, Ron!" Hermione hissed, making Ginny and others turn to glance as well. "You guys are making it so obvious."

"Oh," Ron said after getting a good glance himself, a funny smirk growing on his face. "That's Sam Malfoy, Draco's sister."

"Draco has a sister?" Both Harry and Hermione gasped, both their spoons fell and clanked on their plates.

"Half-sister, I think," Ginny corrected. "Me and my classmates were just talking about her. Samantha's her full name. She's a transferee from Ilvermorny, another Wizarding school in America."

"In America?" Harry wondered. "I didn't know there were other wizarding schools in America... but why though?"

Ginny only shrugged her shoulders, indicating that that was all she knew.

Hermione finally managed to swallow her pudding as she tried to register everything she heard. Only one thing was nagging inside her head. Bullied by Slytherins all through her years in Hogwarts, she had grown cautious and mindful that had anything to do with said house. The smile she saw from the new girl's face was not a friendly smile. Of course, it couldn't be. There's no way in hell she was just being friendly, Hermione thought.

"If she's a Malfoy, could she be... you know... like them?" Hermione managed to ask, no longer having the appetite to finish her plate.

"We'll know for sure," Ron answered, as he reached for another slice of pumpkin pie. "On the following days, probably, if we have the same classes as hers. Maybe she's a year older or-"

"She's in the same class as yours, silly," Ginny intervened. All heads turned her way, suddenly wondering how Ginny knew. "We have ways to find out..."

Then, she quickly added, knowing her brother would comment on how much time she had wasted over gossiping. "And no, Ron, that's not what my classmates and I always do during classes."

And that confirmation only intensified Hermione's fear. She didn't need another Slytherin commenting how she should had just stayed at home or how she didn't belong in Hogwarts in the first place. Hermione had heard it all and she had grown tired of it. But she couldn't bear another soul, who only probably had just seen Hermione, bully her like she'd known her forever. Especially from a spawn that looked like Draco.

"She's like a female version of Draco," Neville suddenly blurted. It appeared he was also listening to the conversation. "Like, double the torment."

Just as what Hermione thought. "But why is she looking at us like that, then? Is she like plotting a war as well?"

Ron glanced towards the Slytherin table again and quickly answered, "She's looking at you. Not us."

"Don't worry," Harry said, noticing how worried Hermione must had looked. "We won't let the Malfoys get you."

"And, besides, she's just a girl," Ron added.

"Very funny, Ron," Hermione spat.

"I didn't mean it as an insult," Ron hurriedly said. "It's just... You're the brightest witch in our age, Hermione... If you could handle Draco and his croons, then what's a female version gonna do that is new to you?"

The conversation immediately died the moment they noticed Professor Dumbledore began to stand. As he made his way to the stand in front of them, the first years suddenly looked nervous and scared. Until he began to talk with his cheerful voice.

Hermione used to pay attention at every word Professor Dumbledore would say during the start of term. But at that moment, she could only catch the words new Potions teacher. And new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Her thoughts were drifting away as she chanced one last good look at Sam Malfoy.

And Sam was still staring at her. The moment their eyes met, Sam smiled.

And it was the most beautiful thing Hermione had seen in her life. How can that be not friendly?

Hermione quickly looked back at Professor Dumbledore, as if she hadn't seen what she just saw, doing her best to avoid Sam.

She really has a beautiful smile though, Hermione's mind betrayed her. I did not know Malfoys can smile. More than a sneer, probably. But what if.... what if Draco already told her about me being a Muggle born? And now, two Malfoys are going to torment me for days to come.

Hermione couldn't stop worrying about what would happen next. But she was more worried how she couldn't get the new girl's face off her head.
