“I’LL just change my clothes.” she said as she stood up. She carried her empty cup and placed it on the kitchen sink. Then, she climbed upstairs until she reached her room. She got inside and removed her shoes and coat. Something fell on the floor. It came from one of the pockets of the coat. She picked it up. It was a paper with a note written on it. N’oubliez pas que je t’aime tant, mon cheri.
“It’s French. What does this mean?” she said to herself. She grabbed her cellular phone and connect it to the internet. While waiting, she changed her dress into shirt and shorts. She translated what the note says. “Remember that I love you so, darling.” she read.
“Je t’aime, mon cheri.” he mumbled.
“What does that mean?” she questioned with an eagerness to know.
“You’ll know it soon.”
“Je t’aime.” she drawled as she typed the words. Then, she read its translation. “I love you.” Her jaw dropped. So that’s what he mean, she thought. He loves me? “No, he knows the real me. It’s not me but my body. He doesn’t even love my soul.” she convinced.
Wait. That paper on her pocket… When did it get there? She didn’t even remember that she placed something in it. Did he place it there this dawn? But he was asleep then, wasn’t he?
That’s when it hit her. He was awake? He knew about it while she’s there. But he didn’t even open his eyes and hinder her from going. Her chest tightened. She suddenly felt guilty.
Haruki stood up, took a deep breath and immediately left the chamber. I’m sorry, she said to her mind as if he would hear it. She climbed down the stairs and called her best friend. “Kazune, I’m gonna make something for breakfast! Wanna join?” she invited then smiled. Deep inside, she’s persuading herself to cheer up.
“Sure.” he said as he join her in the kitchen. They prepared the ingredients.
“Did that Holton guy know that you left?” she heard him ask.
She paused for a second. “Yes.”
“You told him?”
“No, he’ll know it once he woke up.” I bet he knew about it now, she thought. A part of her mind was thinking about the note.
“You should’ve told him.”
She stiffened. Remorse suddenly crawled up to her conscience. “What? You want me to go back there just to inform him?” she retorted.
He shrugged. “Don’t bother. Anyways, be careful. He might come back to find you.” he warned.
Her head snapped to his direction. “To get me back?” She was frightened at the thought. But somehow, a part of her was excited to see him.
“I dunno. But the sure thing is, he wants an explanation. It’ll happen for sure unless...”
“Unless what?”
“He had forgotten about you.”
She didn’t utter a word. It is better if that happens, she thought. Besides, she’s back to where she belongs. He’ll get back to his usual life, too. Everything will be alright, she convinced. Her chest hurts. She suddenly longed for him. Why?
All of a sudden, they heard a click from the main door. “Ah! Were home at last!” a voice said.
“Mom!” Haruki and Kazune exclaimed in unison.
“Oh! Hey kids!” her mom greeted with a wide smile painted on her face.
“I thought you’re going to fetch me at the airport.” Kazune’s mom pouted.
“Oops! Sorry, mom. I forgot.” he shyly said, scratching his nape. Their moms didn’t know about Haruki getting lost. They kept it a secret.
"Anyways, are you preparing a meal? Please do. We’ll just rest here and wait.” her mother said.
“Yes, madam.” Haruki said in a mocking tone. The two Mesdames just laugh. I'll be fine and everything's gonna be alright.
