SHE didn’t care to look back and continue to walk away. ‘Just keep on walking. Don’t look back,’ she commanded to herself.

“Haruki!” he called as she heard the car door slammed. “Stop right there.” There was authority in his voice.

‘Don’t listen, Haruki.’ She closed her eyes. Then she felt an arm wrapped around her small waist. Seconds later, her feet weren’t on the ground anymore.

When she finally opened her eyes, she found out that she was hanging on Holton’s shoulder. She felt embarrassed. With that position, she looked like a log! “Holton, put me down!” She kept on hitting his back.

“Later. This is your punishment for not listening to me.” He continue to walk into the deep forest.

She sighed. “Whatever! Just make sure that you know where we are heading to.”

He smirked. “Of course I know.”

“Don’t you find me heavy?” she asked out of curiosity.

“Nope. Actually, you’re lighter that Light. Tell me, do you skip your meals?”

“No.” she answered gruffly. ‘Sometimes, yes.’

“I don’t believe you.”

She blinked. ‘He’s a mind reader?’

“Hm. You could put it that way.”

She gasped. ‘Whoa! He really is a mind reader. How did that happened?’ She paused, thinking. ‘Oh yeah. It’s because he’s a vampire.’

“Exactly, very well said.”

“Yeah, right. But why do vampires have that ability?”

“Simple, we don’t have souls. We could detect things that vampires do not have.”

“Eh? So you mean vampires don’t have minds?”

“Hm. It’s not really the mind but the emotion... a human’s consciousness and feeling towards something or someone… Based on human studies, it corresponds to the soul.”

“Then how come you can think?”

He snickered. “We still have brains. Although feelings originate from the brain and was just exaggerated by the heart, based on science.”

“Yeah, the so-called hypothalamus. But emotions and mind always come in pair, right?”

“Well, the mind was more on the intellectual aspect and the emotion was more on what’s good or bad, worthy or not, moral and immoral... We could be as intelligent as humans but as ruthless as animals.”

She didn’t bother to utter another word. What he said made her think twice. ‘Ruthless? Is he that ruthless?’

“Here you go.” He  Finally, he placed her down.

“Thanks.” They were standing at the top of a hill. “That mansion over there…” she said as she pointed it out.

“Huh?”

“We had stargazing before on its roof, right?” She looked back at him.

A smiled curved on his lips. “I thought you’ve already forgotten about it.”

“No and why would I? It’s one of the best nights in my life. I was able to face my fear—fear of heights.”

He chuckled. “Care to sit down?” he said as he point out the tall tree with thick foliage.

“Yeah, sure.” She walk passed him, sat down and laid her back against its huge trunk.

The blond Holton slumped beside her.

“Where’s Light, by the way?”

“It’s inside the car.”

Her eyebrows almost met. “You left it there?”

“Light’s a great security guard, trust me.”

She sighed.
