  Carol of the Bells

The bells chimed at St. Martin's Square just as the clock struck the Cinderella hour,

Cries of joy rang as the bells chimed of gladness from atop the tower.

The steeple resounding with the gaiety of a thousand happy hearts,

But one little thing was missing- the revelry was missing one little part.

For in the deserted alleyway, a frightful sight awaited,

A goon who waited for a victim to be easily sedated,

But then a man of rotund face walked straight up to him and said,

"Merry Christmas, boy," and drew a wallet from his suit of red.

The boy was shocked, he had not asked, but he grabbed the dough, "

Only spread the joy, my boy," and he was about to go-

but the boy stopped him to ask his name, but the man simply smiled,

"I'm the spirit of Christmas" he said and vanished before his eyes.

Then, tears in his eyes, the goon took the money to an old flat,

where he opened the door with an old key and dodged a passing rat,

At the other end, an old lady sat, under a withered christmas tree

and sang in a half- broken voice, "Merry Christmas to me."

The man put down the money and hugged the old, surprised lady,

"Merry Christmas, mommy" cried the man as the bells finished the melody.
