1993

Water boiled and a girl hummed, bored.

Vanya and Madelina were sitting at the end of the table, refusing to eat their breakfast.

The nanny smiled and leaned close to the four-year-olds. "Your brothers and sister have all finished their oatmeal and begun their training for the dad. Don't you two want to join them, Number Seven, Number Seven.Five?" She clicked her tongue. "Are two someones having a rough morning?"

The kettle whistled and Madelina's humming got louder.

"You know what cheers me up when I'm down? Singing. Like you're doing, Number Seven.Five." She began singing 'L'Empereur, sa femme et le petit' in French.

The kettle whistling and humming grew louder and the wind began whipping.

"Oh!" The nanny cried and groaned.

The whistling kettle faded and the hypnotic humming died down.

Sir Reginald stepped into the room. "Number Seven! Number Seven.Five! Hm."

Another nanny smiled at the twins. "Hi, Number Seven, Number Seven.Five. I'm your new nanny, Mrs. Cornwallis."

The kettle whistled and the kitchen was filled with hypnotic humming. A rattling began.

"Oh!" Mrs. Cornwallis cried before her neck snapped.

"Number Seven! Number Seven.Five!" Sir Reginald cried. "Hm."

A third nanny smiled at the twins. "Bonjour. I'm Miss Stevenbaker and I am your new nanny."

There was a rattling and soft, entrancing humming. Miss Stevenbaker screamed.

"Number Seven! Number Seven.Five!" Sir Reginald yelled. "Hm."

A blonde woman smiled at the twins. "Hello, Number Seven, Number Seven.Five. Your father tells me you two don't like oatmeal, but we need our breakfast to grow up big and strong, and you two have to train with the others after you both eat. Here, let me help you two."

She lifted two spoons of oatmeal and the kettle began whistling. A rattling sounded and Madelina started her hypnotic humming.

Grace hit the wall and her neck cracked. She stood and looked at the twins with her backwards head. "Hmm. Shall we try again?"

The twins exchanged a panicked look before they rapidly started eating their oatmeal.

August rushed into the medical room while Madelina ran upstairs.

Diego turned at the newcomer. "August? What are you doing here?"

"I got a call about a critically injured patient," August lied.

"Right. Well, we could use all the help we can get. Thanks for coming, man."

Grace looked Allison over. "She's suffered a severe laceration to her larynx. One of you will need to give blood."

"I will," the Hargreeves' men said.

"I will," Luther decided. "I'm doing it."

Pogo shook his head. "I'm afraid that's not possible, dear boy. Your blood is more compatible with mine."
