Jael, come down this instant!"
My mum called out. Yep. I'm totally done for.
I descended the stairs as gently as possible as I put on my puppy face.
"And what's with that face?"
"Is it working?" I asked hopeful
"No. Get seated. Your dad and I have a lot to say."

True. She stuck to her to her word. She spoke for hours. She went on and on about what scripture teaches us about fornication. But who said scripture taught me anything?
Of course, I didn't say that out loud. She'd bury me alive.

Having a born and bred African as a mother is not easy. Black mums never stop talking, especially when they're mad, about everything and anything you have or haven't done. Father remain silent throughout her 45min sermon.

She finally concluded.
"So Jael, please know that, 'God's will is for you to be holy so you must stay away from all sexual sins as 1Thessalonians 4:3 puts it. Are we clear?... Jael?... JAEL!!!"
Her scream broke into my reverie.
"I can't believe you weren't listening Jael!"
I could only sigh.

"You can decide to listen to this or ignore it as well but I'm dead serious  and if you violate this, I'll take extreme measures."
She was mad, I could tell. Way to go, Jael.
"You're grounded for a month and that means no lab for a whole month. You're allowed to use your computer but only on weekends. Do I make myself clear? And don't even think about sneaking off Myles'. His parents would inform me immediately. Do you have anything to say?"
"The lab-
"Don't even think about it. I'm not going to change my mind."

Mum was never this harsh. Never. She was the sweetest just like Jayla. I can't believe she took my right to use the lab in the basement. That was my home. Who am I kidding? I'm sure she hates me for what I've done.

My mum was very strict when it came to her faith and she made sure we all grew up knowing the Lord. At least, that's what she thought.
But I can't just let her leave me with nothing to do every afternoon for a month. At least, I want to be able to go to the lab.
"I can't just sit on my bed all afternoon doing nothing for the next one month."

Mum wanted to reply but  dad stepped in after the long silence.
"You're right Jael, you can't be idle all afternoon for a month..."
Yay! Go daddy! You're favorite guy
Mum gave him the death stare. I even thought she would rip his throat.

He continued never breaking eye contact with mum.
"... that's why from henceforth Jael is going to help you out with all the preparations towards the Afro Praise Festival."
What?! Okay so I take back all I said earlier. Way to go Daddy. I can't believe this is happening. Mum don't accept this. Don't... don't... I crossed my fingers in anticipation.
She looked at him in the eye, he didn't look away. I could tell they were communicating but not in words it was as silent as the grave. After a while, mum turned to me she had a warm smile on her face.
Oh no...
"Welcome to the Afro Praise Family..." she hugged me.
Oh goodness, this is going to be worse than being locked up all afternoon.
"See you tomorrow baby." She kissed me on the cheek and left with my dad overjoyed.
What did they have planned for me? Guess I'll soon find out...
