Afro Praise became my escape from sitting at home all afternoon everyday doing nothing. Besides, watching live drama performances was a thrill.
Myles called me on my way back home with my mum and Jayla. I put the call on speaker.
"Hey buddy."
"Hi Myles"
"Wanna go out to the movies tonight?"
I looked at my mum from the rear view mirror. She was also looking at me.
Myles continued. He could sense my parent was around.
"The movie is science fiction. I watched the trailer. It was amazing. We'll be back before 10pm, I assure you."
"Sure, pick me up at 8."
My mum looked sternly at me. Immediately, I ended the call, she spoke up.
"Young lady, have you forgotten you're grounded?"
"You didn't say no while Myles was speaking."When I got home, I jumped into my bath and had a very relaxing moment. Half past seven, I got out and started getting ready. I picked my black leather jacket over a purple spaghetti strapped blouse on black pants.
I tied a head scarf round my head and let my Afro loose as I slid into my sneakers and headed to the door. Myles was already outside. He was quite the punctual one. We stepped into the Porsche and he drove off.I loved the movie but certainly not the people in there. There was no touch of romance just plain horror. Just as I like it.
But the people in there were infuriating. They couldn't keep their voices down. A lady even burst into tears and had to been escorted out.
I still don't get why people walk into the cinemas and pay for horror movies and when they get in, all they do is scream. Seriously, did they expect to see an assassin on a pony riding in the land of the rainbows coming to rescue Cinderella?!But I was thankful for this getaway. Myles and I really needed this. We began to catch up and before we knew it, we were back to being buddies again. Myles was my home away from home. He understood me in a way that dazzled me. Even when I shut everybody out, he still managed to wriggle his way, penetrating through the walls I had set up, straight to my heart.
Myles was surely the friend that sticks closer than a brother. As we drove back home, I took the opportunity to apologize.
"Myles-
"Yeah"
"I'm sorry... for not telling you about what happened with Liam. I know we tell each other everything."
"No need to apologize. I wasn't mad because you didn't tell me about. I was mad because you didn't see the consequences of your actions."
"Huh?"
"Jael... haven't you heard of the effects of fornication in the Bible? Sexual sins are very grave sins, Jael. They're like blood pacts and I don't want that for you."Here we go again. Like mum's sermon was not enough. He continued
"Besides, your family is well known and respected, especially for their grounded faith in Christ. If your dad hadn't paid so much to have video taken down, your family's name would have been dragged through the mud."
He sighed.
"Jael... didn't you for once, think about your dreams. Your college application to Harvard may be refused with a video like that."That hit me bad. Tears welled up in my eyes. I didn't even realize we were already at my stop. I couldn't let him see me cry again. No one could see me cry.
I got out and run as fast as I could straight to my room. Once I felt secured behind my locked door, I burst into tears. If I lose my admission, my dreams and aspirations and everything I've ever wanted goes with it. Nothing I do ever turns out good. I'm hopeless. I wept until I passed out on the cold floor.
