Chapter 68- The Visitor

The two men sat on the couch in the living room. The fireplace ablaze as Magnus looked at the laptop on Alec's legs. The pair looked through the website as they looked at various houses. Neither could agree on anything as they tried to find the perfect house but it seemed they wanted the opposite. Magnus wanted a bigger house, at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a nice big garden. Alec, however, wanted to downgrade. He either wanted a small house or a flat, maximum of two bedrooms and no garden because he didn't want to deal with gardening.

They had just started to find a house that they both liked when there was a knock at the door and Alec frowned as he stood up. Maryse and Max had gone out shopping and he wasn't expecting anyone. His frown deepened seeing a woman standing there with a baby in her arms.

"Hello. I am Clarissa. Is there a Magnus Bane here?" The woman asked.

"Erm, yes. Magnus..." Alec called out. He looked at Magnus confused as Magnus came to the door and then looked equally confused.

"Hello, Can I help you?" Magnus asked her.

"Hello, Mr Bane I assume. My name is Clarissa Reynolds. I am with social services" She smiled and showed him her ID badge. "I am here because of Daphne Arthurs. I believe you know her?"

"I recognise the name" Magnus frowned as he tried to remember who the woman was.

"According to her, you two slept together and she became pregnant. Unfortunately, certain circumstances have made her unable to care for the baby" Clarissa said and then sighed as Magnus went white. "I can tell this is a shock. Did you have no idea?"

"N-No. This must be a mistake. Are you sure he... she... is mine?" Magnus said as his breathing became uneven.

"Well we do need to do a formal DNA but she is certain you are the father," The woman said. "The baby is a boy. His name is Max. He is three months old"

"But... What... I... erm..." Magnus stuttered, unable to form a sentence.

"Can I come in?" She asked and Magnus nodded as he stepped aside to let her in and noticed Alec was pale too and hadn't said a word.

"So... what.. what erm... what happens now?" Magnus asked.

"Well the baby will be left in your care and I will do weekly visits. I need to take a DNA sample to confirm that Max is yours and then... He is yours. Daphne has lost all rights to him. It's a sad story. She got into the wrong crowd and started taking drugs. She's now in prison for theft and violence. She was already under the care of social services for neglect of Max. Now she has lost all rights" Clarissa explained. "Would you like to hold him?"

"Oh. I... Okay" Magnus said unsure as he took the baby, a little awkward at first but Clarissa helped him get the baby in the right position.

Magnus looked at Alec who sat down and stared into space. Unsure on how to process what was happening. Magnus sighed and looked down at the baby. He wasn't sure what he felt at first but when the baby looked at him and cooed before he touched Magnus's face, Magnus smiled.

"Hello. So I am your daddy" Magnus said and chuckled slightly in surprise. "Max. My son Max"

"It's lovely, isn't it?" Clarissa smiled at Alec who just nodded and then looked away. "I'm sorry to be so quick but I do have other appointments today so I need to take the swab. Would you like me to do it or do you want me to take Max?"

"No, it's okay. It's a cheek swab, right? Or is that just in shows?" Magnus chuckled.

"No that's right and a stand of hair" She smiled. She got out the swab and Magnus opened his mouth as the woman swabbed his cheek before waiting for Magnus to pull a strand of hair out and put it in a clear bag.

"Is that all you need?" Magnus asked.

"I just need a couple of signatures," She said.

"Can Alec sign? He is my fiancé" Magnus smiled.

"Of course," The woman said and handed the papers to Alec who didn't take much notice as he signed both documents silently. "Thank you. This is for you and this is all of Max's needs. There is also all the food and diapers and other similar stuff that Daphne had to get you started. I will pop by in a couple of days to check in so I need you to make sure you have everything"

"I will get started immediately. Oh, wait, how did you find me? How do you know I'm okay to look after him?" Magnus frowned, confused.

"Oh, sorry. Well, we work closely with the police and I know about your recent... issues, regarding everything. In recent police files, it is said you are staying here so I thought I'd try my luck. I'm glad I found you. As for making sure you are a suitable parent, due to the circumstances we were permitted the courts to look into your details. I know you have the finances and stability to care for young Max here" She smiled.

"I see. Okay, well... thank you" Magnus smiled and then looked at Max happily. "I... I can't believe it"

"I hope you're all very happy together. I'll see myself out. Good luck" Clarissa said and then left with all her stuff.

Magnus still couldn't believe it as he sat next to Alec on the couch, in complete euphoria. His heart swelling with love and pride as he looked at Max and then beamed at Alec before frowning slightly at Alec expression.

"Are you okay?" Magnus asked.

"Fine," Alec said quickly.

"You don't sound it. Are you not happy?" Magnus asked again, now concerned.

"I don't feel anything right now. This woman has sprung this kid on us. I don't know what to feel" Alec shrugged. "I'm going to call mom and see where she and Max are."

"Wait, Alexander..." Magnus chuckled.

"What? Why are you laughing?" Alec frowned.

"Your brother is called Max. My son is Max. Your brother isn't the baby Max anymore" Magnus laughed.

"Yeah. True. Funny" Alec said without laughing and walked out.

Magnus frowned, confused at Alec's reaction. He didn't expect him to be jumping for joy but the fact that Alec seemed so annoyed and bitter didn't make him feel comfortable. He was about to go after him when he smelt poo and looked at Max who was looking at him with big blue eyes and then farted. Magnus's eyes went wide and pulled out his phone to google how to change a diaper before changing not only a diaper for the first time but his own son's diaper.
