Amirah sat on the floor and hugged her knee to her chest as tears ran down her cheeks, she didn't know what was wrong with her, she didn't know what made her speak to Muhammad in such manner and to think, she'd thought she was smart and had gotten away with her lies about where she'd been the day she'd gone out with AbdulRahman.
Muhammad had known but he had let it slide but what about her? What'd she do? She'd confronted him about it like she was a saint herself meanwhile she was the hypocrite. To tell the truth, she'd been scared.
Zulaihat had gotten out of the taxi just as AbdulRahman had given her a peck, she'd stood wide-eyed staring, AbdulRahman hadn't noticed her so he strolled to his car, got in and drove off just as another lady got out of the taxi, she was short, smallish and very beautiful. The lady moved to the trunk as the taxi driver brought out a two mini boxes, she pulled them and then turned to Amirah,
"Are you Yaya's wife?"
"She is." Zulaihat said curtly as they both moved closer. Amirah could only stare back wordlessly, Zulaihat had seen AbdulRahman peck her, there was no explanation for it. First Abubakar and now Zulaihat, AbdulRahman was trouble and he was on his way to ruining her.
"MashAllah, you're so beautiful. Yaya gave us the house address, he said he has a surgery or he'd have come to pick us up himself. Do you know what happened to us? We were..."
"Who are you?" Amirah blurted and Zulaihat sent her a glare.
"She's my friend, Aunty Jamilah's younger sister, are you going let us in or what?" Zulaihat asked. Amirah took in a deep breath before she went inside letting the guests follow suite. Why was Zulaihat here? Why was her friend here and most of all why didn't Muhammad tell her that his sister was coming?
"Your house is so fine, isn't it beautiful Zulaihat? Look at the mini garden." Amirah didn't acknowledge the compliment, instead she headed to one of the extra rooms and unlocked it. It was sparkling clean because of her intolerance for dirt.
"This will be your room." She said.
"Thank you, so sorry for imposing and..."
"You talk too much." Zulaihat interrupted her as she slumped down on the huge bed.
"What can I get you girls?" Amirah asked trying to play her part of a hostess even though she wanted to leave immediately just to escape the way Zulaihat has been looking at her and she hated the fact that Muhammad's late fiance's younger sister was also here.
"We're fine, you can leave!" Zulaihat snapped and her friend looked at her in shock. Amirah turned on her heels and went inside her room, she was unsettled, scared and uncomfortable.
Abubakar might have kept quiet about what he'd seen for whatever reason but Zulaihat won't, she was his sister after all.Amirah took out her drawing sheets and began designing, sketching building calmed her nerves and that was how Muhammad had met her.
"Useless woman, leave me let me get my hands on her. She's her mother's daughter, no doubt." Amirah's head snapped up as she heard Zulaihat's voice.
"Disrespectful slut." Her voice sounded closer and soon the door to her bedroom flung open and Zulaihat marched in with her friend at her tail, trying to hold her back but her small statue wasn't a match for Zulaihat's.
"Only a bad woman will fight with her husband over his sister visiting them to the extent she got him angry enough for him to decide to sleep outside his home. Please Amirah, what's your problem? What did my brother do to deserve you?"
Amirah stood up from the floor and was about walking out when Zulaihat pulled her back forcefully, she stumbled and almost fell.
"You better be careful, I'm trying to avoid having a fight with you so please..."
"Please what? What will you do? Zulaihat screamed at her face, her friend was pulling her back pleadingly.
"Leave me alone Ruqayya, let her realize she's nothing special and if not for the unfortunate event, she wouldn't even be here as Yaya's wife."
"Well why don't you come and kill me? At least I'm here, I'm married..."Zulaihat didn't let her finish her statement before slapping her hard on the face, Amirah's stun was just for a few seconds before she swung her palm and gave Zulaihat a slap too.
"You had the audacity to slap me back? Who do you think you are?" Zulaihat screamed holding her cheek.
"I'm Hajiya Lolo's daughter and the next time you ever raise your hand to hit me, I'll do worse than hit you back."
"DanAllah you both should stop this. Yaya isn't here and it is not good that you're fighting, Zulaihat please." Ruqayya was crying and Amirah saw how her tears softened Zulaihat.
"This is just the beginning." She promised before walking out. Amirah began pacing on her room, she rubbed her cheeks that were aching before finally going into the toilet to wash her face.
Her cheeks were reddened and her eyes puffy from when she'd been crying, her hair was disheveled. She hated how she looked.
This marriage was draining her, she couldn't remember a day spent well with Muhammad, a day that started well and ended well. She'd never as much as laughed and be happy for just a day, she really missed home... Who said marriage was easy? And when you start reconciling with your husband, someone from his family will just come over and ruin it.
She took a long shower, brushed her teeth, combed her hair and then went to bed. She wanted to call Muhammad to apologise but she decided to let him be so she went into one of her unopened box and brought out a pill she hadn't used in a while. She took three sleeping pills and laid on her bed.
The next morning, the first thing Amirah thought of when she woke up was to call Muhammad so she picked up her phone and dialed his number, after the first ring, he didn't pick so she called again.
"Hello, can you call back later? He's sleeping." The unmistaken voice of Ummul Khair announced. Amirah hung up.
