The salt in the air was one of my favorite things in the universe; even though it stuck to my hair and made my skin wrinkle like little grapes. To me there was nothing better than sore thighs and calloused fingers from grabbing the board all day.

These days didn't happen too often for me, and I had fully taken advantage of the few hours I had free. From the time the sun sat pretty in the middle of the sky, to when it just started to make the ocean a beautiful haze of orange, I stayed in the water.

My hair had knotted into something unforgettable and I knew it would take half a bottle of conditioner to wrestle the little bits and pieces of seaweed out.

I didn't exactly care, though. Every knot and scabbed knee was worth it.

My board was floating in the water and my back was pressed firmly against it. The waves had calmed to a dull lull and I was now looking up at the sky. The soft baby blue had just faded and I could barely make out the pale stars that wanted to come out and play.

It was beautiful.

"Hey, you planning on coming tonight or what?"

I jumped when I heard the sound of someone yelling. I was able to catch my balance before the board shifted too much. Shielding my eyes from the setting sun, I looked towards the shore about twenty feet away.

A smile immediately broke out on my face and I started to laugh. "I'm guessing you won't like the answer I want to give you!" I yelled.

"Get your ass out of the water, little mermaid."

I laughed again and moved so I was laying flat. Then I started to paddle towards the shore. "So bossy. Is it that time of the month?"

Lizzie laughed and shook her head as the wind picked up. "You're an idiot."

"You love me though!" I yelled.

As soon as I got close enough, I slid off the board and started to jog out of the rest of the water. The warm air was nice on my skin after spending the afternoon in cooler water.

"Jesus, you're a mess. We're going to be late." Lizzie said in a distasteful tone.

"You want a hug?" I asked. She was already dressed up for the night; and she looked radiating. I opened my arms and took a step closer.

"Don't you dare touch me! This dress is worth more than two of you."

"That's such a mean thing to say," I mocked sadness. "I guess only a hug will make up for it."
