Chapter 5

My knees buckle beneath me, leaving me to crash to the cold stone floor. Warm tears run down my face, soaking the stone beneath me. Sobs drown out the comotion of the roudy Dauntless, laughing and smiling with their loved ones. Part of me wonders if Zeke would joke about this.

"That's not funny" I say, not believing my ears.

"I'm sorry Tris bu-" Zeke starts

"No... where is he?" No answer "WHERE IS HE" I shouted

"He's at the chasm" Christina said. I gasped, he wouldn't.

"No no the small hidden spot by the chasm" Christina clarified I sighed in relief and started towards our spot. Christina started to protest but Zeke stopped her. The closer I got to our spot the more worried I became. He wouldn't do that, would he? Would he really want to forget me?

I approached the spot beside the chasm and entered cautiously. There, on the rocks, sat a person. Though I couldn't see their face I knew that it was Tobias.

"Tobias?" I called, he didn't seem to notice me "Tobias?" I repeat, it occurred to me that they mustn't have told him about his past, that includes his name.

"Four" I called, the name seems foreign in my mouth. His head whips around and his eyes land on mine. Then I know that he did, in fact, take the serum. He would act differently if I had come back, if he had remembered. He looks blankly at me.

"Um hi, do I know you?" he asks while tears trace my cheeks

"You did" I mutter sadly, choaking on supressed sobs "Can I sit with you?" I ask

"Uh... yeah, course" I sigh and plop down next to him. it takes everything I have not to kiss him then and there. "So... I didn't get your name"

"It's..." I pause, taking in the fact that I'm telling my boyfriend my name

"Is it a hard one?" He asks smiling. a single tear runs down my cheek. That's what he asked me the first time we met. "Oh, um I'm sorry I didn't-"

"No it's alright, my names Tris" I say and cry more. A strong arm wraps around my shoulders as Tobias akwardly trys to comfort me. He discomfort causes me to laugh slightly. Not even memory serum could take away his selfless insticts.

"So um, any chance you know anything about me? I keep asking Zeke, Christina and Shauana but they won't tell me anything about myself."

"You took memory serum, you wanted to forget" I remind him

"I want to remember" he begs

"I'm not sure that's possible, I could ask around if you wanted?"

"That would be great, but could you tell me about my past?"

"Are you sure?" I ask. he nods

"Well um, your name is Tobias Eaton, you transferred from abnegation to Duantless. Your father was a leader, but uh..." I pause " wow never thought I'd have to explain this to you. Anyway, he was abusive, he would beat you and you mother. Your mother 'died' but she wasn't actually dead. When you transferred here, she contacted you somehow and you found out that she was alive. That's just a brief summery though" I tell him. He stares at me in shock.

"That's why I took memory serum?" He asks and I shake my head

"No but that's a conversation for another day" I say

"What about you, how'd I meet you?" He asks.

I spend the rest of the night explaining our relationship to my boyfriend, leaving out the fact that we were a couple. I dont want his love by default
