Connor readjusted his grip on her, tucking her head closer to him.
New York is bustling with energy. Markets selling merchandise, merchants bargaining, coins jumbling. Yes, everyone is quite busy today.
Normally, Helena would be tailing behind Connor; watching his back. Unfortunately, Washington needed her assistance. That left Connor with little choice but to meet his father alone.
But.
Y/n just happens to stalk after him. How did she make it to New York? He didn't know.
"Connor."
Connor stopped walking, tightening his grip on Y/n before turning.
"Father."
Haytham's gaze went from Connor to the little girl in his son's grasps.
E/c eyes quickly reverted from Haytham's steel gray ones. She turned her back to him, arms tightly going around Connor's neck.
"I didn't realize you had a child," said Haytham. "I'm quite shocked you had the time to do so."
"Why does it matter to you?" Connor replied, placing Y/n down on the ground.
Immediately, her arms went around Connor's leg. One hand rested on the back of her head, pulling her closer to him.
"She's my granddaughter, Connor," said Haytham. "Ah, and speaking of family, where is my daughter-in-law? I see that she's not with you."
"She is none of your concern."
"Not my concern? Connor, she's a Kenway now. She is my concern as much as she is yours."
"Daddy," Y/n mumbled. "I wanna go home."
Connor didn't answer, choosing you glare at Haytham instead.
"I see that I've arrived at the right time." Connor's gaze snapped behind Haytham.
Helena.
"Hello, Haytham," said Helena, going around Haytham.
Her arm hooked to Connor's, leaning against him.
"Mummy!" Y/n cheered, letting go of Connor's leg.
Y/n hugged Helena's waist, burying her face in Helena's tummy.
"Well," said Helena. "I, for one, would like to return home and rest. Don't you, 내 사랑*?"
Connor held Haytham's gaze before turning his attention to Helena.
"Let's go."
"Helena?" Connor called out.
The homestead is unusually quiet. Y/n is still asleep in his bedroom and so is Achilles. Helena, on the other hand, was gone.
No letter, no note, no message. Nothing.
Where could she have gone?
"I won't be here for long," said Helena. "Just a moment of your time, Haytham."
The Grandmaster leaned back into his seat with a sigh. Standing in front of him was his daughter-in-law.
It was strange to see someone from Asia with intense blue eyes. After all, her father was a Welshman.
"And what exactly is it that you wish to speak about?" Haytham replied.
Helena planted her palms against the desk.
"Whatever it is that you're planning, I assure you, Connor will not have it," said Helena. "I can see it in your eyes. Y/n will not be swayed by your manipulation tactics."
"Manipulation?" Haytham repeated. "My dear, all I want from Y/n is to have a choice. You had a choice as well, Helena. A choice to become a Templar, but instead, you chose the assassins."
Her eyes narrowed at Haytham.
"My father was a monster and no good of a man," said Helena. "And I don't tolerate anyone who bullies others. Good day, Kenway."
Helena spun on her heels and marched out of his office.
"Wait."
One foot out the door, the other in. Helena glanced over to Haytham.
"I understand family is important to you," said Haytham. "If only his mother had stayed with me, we wouldn't be fighting one another."
"It's too late for that," said Helena. "Just as much as it's too late to repair your relationship with him."
The door shut behind her and Haytham sighed.
"Indeed it is, Helena. Indeed it is."
"Where did you go?" Connor quietly asked.
Helena and Connor stood on the balcony of the homestead, watching Y/n run after the children.
"Just somewhere," said Helena. "It's nothing for you to worry about."
Connor stared at Helena. She's always been good at hiding secrets, spinning tales of lies; with him, on the other hand, was different.
He's her husband. Their marriage was built on trust. With that in mind, Helena still hides from him.
"We should stop the fight before it gets worse," Helena muttered, swinging over the edge of the balcony.
Connor blinked, watching his wife hit the ground. Watching her approach Y/n, he realized that Y/n was in the middle of a fist fight.
"There, there," said Helena to Y/n. "Don't pout. You'll win next time."
Y/n jutted her lower lip at Helena.
*= my love.
